Have you ever been in a position, you are laid in bed, eyes closed, trying to drift off into that wonderful land of dreams, except, across the road a continuous *thud* *thud* *thud* of an infernal racket keeps you chained to the hell that is the full conscious real world. Laid there, slowly feeling the onset of insanity seeping in, wishing you could, how shall we put it, ‘do something about it’. With Party Hard you get at the very least a chance to quail those thoughts of insanity as the story has you playing a character who has very much become broken by the party generation of our society, so broken he feels he needs to put a stop to the party and party goers, permanently.
It doesn’t stop there however, moving on from the party at the neighbors that was keeping you awake, a killing spree soon takes you on a trip across the country going from party to party on a personal vendetta to end the pain of injustice on your sleeping habits and so the game starts to take shape. The concept of the game you may gather if you have been paying attention is very simple, move from party to party bringing these parties to a premature end. Completing these tasks however is not so straight forward. Giving that you are among a large group of people your actions are always under observation so every action you make has to be carefully considered so you don’t land yourself in hot water.
Each party has a specific theme/setting and within that a few random elements to keep each play interesting. The theme in itself means that although each end goal is the same from party to party you have to adjust your play depending on what you are presented with within that specific level. Tactics include the straight forward killing of people yourself, setting traps such as explosions and even calling in help to dispatch those horrible party goers, which could even include alien abductions. Object pickups and even which of the unlocked characters you play can alter the way you play out a level also. However, stay alert of all the people that are still very conscious and walking about as things like dead bodies and even witnessing your actions could soon land you with the law on the scene.
Playing Party Hard, it is fair to say that it doesn’t really bring anything majorly new to the gameplay table, ultimately it’s trying to have a bit of fun and tell a story in the process and then have some more fun. You have spot sound effects that keep the atmosphere and alert you to things goings on while the graphics are relatively simple and clean. It can be a little frustrating trying to find yourself in a new level and there are some moments of confusion when navigating around some raised areas of a given level. The negatives however don’t detract too much from the game because even with the simple style, the execution still makes it a wonderful distraction from what some would consider the increasing drivel that has become traditional from the stable of triple A titles.
Now, if you don’t mind, I’ve got a sleepless night to prevent.
