Phil Spencer has announced Project Scorpio, a new Xbox console with true 4K gaming. The console will feature 6 teraflops of GPU performance, 8 CPU cores, and over 320 GB/s of memory bandwidth. The video montage at E3 has shown developers talking about what the new Xbox console will look like including the VR support for games such as Fallout 4. It is scheduled for release in Holiday 2017.
Not much else is known about this obviously, but it is apparent that this generation of gaming is already transitioning after 4 years. The console will still be apart of the Xbox One family so all accessories and games will continue to work, except run better on the Scorpio. Backward compatibility will still run as well. This makes sense considering Microsoft seems to be ensuring that this generation continues to go on with upgraded hardware instead of starting a completely new gen and locking out the previous owners. This PC like approach to consoles could ensure that this generation is a huge change from the days of the past and it is super interesting to see.
We’ll all have to wait and see more on the Scorpio in the coming year, and see how Sony reacts with their upcoming PS4 NEO console.
