Tower Of Guns Xbox One Review
Age rating: Everyone 10+ Fantasy Violence Xbox Live Store Price: $14.99 12 Achievements – 1000G Release Date: April 10th 2015 Platforms – Xbox One, PS4, PC Tower of Guns is a first person shooter title from Terrible Posture Games available on Steam, PS4 and the Xbox One which was recently made available via the ID@Xbox program. For the sake of this review, the copy we were provided with was the Xbox One version, although the experience should be the same on all platforms. The concept of the game is simple yet charming, and has you gunning through a tower (of guns!) collecting loot and powerups. Sounds pretty standard right? Wrong! What makes this game interesting is the fact that the levels, enemies and loot in the tower are randomly generated. To make it more interesting, a random story is chosen each time you run through the game which makes the experience different each time. For instance, one run I was trying to deliver groceries to an elderly woman at the top of the tower, and another I was a developer of the game chatting with my brother while climbing the tower. The stories are basic, yet they offer some humor and help add to each experience you have. The gameplay is simple, you start off with one gun and perk but unlock more as you progress. Each ‘run’ starts you off fresh and dying even once makes you start a new one which ultimately isn’t as frustrating as it seems as you get back on your feet pretty quickly. ‘Beating’ the game really only takes about 20-30 minutes, even shorter if you try speed running. The game is fantastic as a “lunch break” game which is exactly how developer Joe Mirabello describes it. The game features a cel-shaded art style which is very reminiscent of Borderlands. I instantly fell in love with the art style, it really accompanies the game well. The game features tons of powerups, and collecting them to proceed without dying is crucial. I spent many of my first runs dying because I would simply try and run through as quickly as I could. I realized my mistake when I made it the bosses and could barely manage a few hits in without dying. After spending some time with the game, I slowed down and killed every enemy collecting powerup after powerup and managed to beat the final boss with relative ease. Speaking of bosses, the randomized boss battles also add a nice element of surprise to the game and keeps you on your toes the whole time. The powerups and guns are also crazy, and the more you collect the more fun you have. Having multiple jumps and speed boosts is just so fun and satisfying. Overall, this game is a fantastic time killer. People looking for a heavily story driven game will be disappointed, but if you are looking for a fun time while shooting down enemy after enemy, you’ll have a blast. The game also features some pretty manageable and fun achievements, so I’d heavily advise achievement hunters to pick the game up. Tower of Guns proves that the shooter genre can still have some new concepts even if it is starting to get stale, and most importantly it is fun, something we don’t seem to get enough of these days. Final thoughts: Fun and randomized game, best played in short bursts. Can get repetitive if played for long periods of time, but the game is very solid. It deserves a nice 7.5/10.
