For those paying attention to current events regarding the Evolution Championship Series, 2020 missed a year with its annual world championship lineup. Although COVID-19 remains to be the direct reasoning for most events to skip on being held at expected timeframes, that was not the case for the organization. Instead it was to blame for founder Joey Cuellar with allegations surfacing and publisher pulling games from the event.
Amid the outcome of the event going on for more than two decades, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced its acquisition plans for EVO after. In 2021 we witnessed the event being held online with precautions still in effect at the time. However, 2022 will be different with the venue being primed for EVO 2022 returning back to Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada.
This week the organization has revealed its lineup for EVO 2022 with a total of nine games in total. You can view the roster in the tweet below:
Noted, this will be the first time Super Smash Bros. will be absent from the EVO lineup. While details are not clarified, the firm did make a statement on the matters. “Since 2007, we’ve seen historic Super Smash Bros. moments created at EVO’s events. We are saddened that Nintendo has chosen not to continue that legacy with us this year.”
Although it is not clarified, it is best understood by the recent roster announcement to clear the skies. In that, all titles revealed according to the official EVO FAQ reveals that all games will be played and competed on PlayStation 4. Of course, that is not possible with any Super Smash Bros. title.
