Baldur’s Gate 3 Gets August Release Date With PlayStation 5 Version Reveal

The Baldur’s Gate IP remains a long-running series for more than two decades. For players unfamiliar, Baldur’s Gate is a video game series based off the Dungeon & Dragons tabletop franchise – more precisely the ruleset licensed by Wizards of the Coast. Baldur’s Gate 3, the newest installment in the series, is on the way for release. Although the game has been out for Early Access since 2020, the full release is still awaited. From the recently held PlayStation State of Play presentation, Larian Studios took the spotlight to showcase Baldur’s Gate 3. Not only a PlayStation 5 build of the game, but also the official release date slated for August later this summer. You can watch the new trailer in the video below: “The land of Faerûn is under siege by a hostile and otherworldly force known as mind flayers. Their army expands with every brain they infect with parasitic tadpoles, a creature that now wriggles deep within your own mind. You are becoming one of them: a monster feared across many worlds. But as their corruption grows within you, so do mysterious new powers,” Creative Director Swen Vincke gives for the game’s synopsis. “Baldur’s Gate 3 is a next-generation cinematic RPG set in the Forgotten Realms. It’s a true Dungeons & Dragons experience in video game form, and the long-awaited third installment in the Baldur’s Gate series. Whether you’ve been waiting for this game for 20+ years or the previous sentence is a mystery to you, adventure awaits you in Baldur’s Gate 3’s tale of fellowship and betrayal, sacrifice and survival, and the lure of absolute power. “Create a character of your own or play as one of a dream-team of handcrafted Origin characters, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes.” One surprise from the trailer is the casting of actor J.K. Simmons for Baldur’s Gate 3. Are you excited for Baldur’s Gate 3 release this summer? Baldur’s Gate 3 ships for PlayStation 5, PC, and Mac on August 31, 2023. Source: PlayStation Blog

What is more baffling is that the game does go on to answer local-play is out of the question too. “Co-op mode will only be available online with an internet connection. The game will not support local co-op.” However, the game will feature cross-platform play which is appreciated to say the least. This is a continued trend for upcoming releases over the past year for major AAA titles. Last year, Gran Turismo 7 had the same requirement. Not only that, Arkane Studios recently confirmed that is upcoming Redfall – releasing the same month as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League – will also ask for a constant online connection.
