Review: PowerA MOGA XP5-i Plus Bluetooth Controller

Review unit provided by PowerA The MOGA line of controllers from PowerA is made solely for mobile gaming, with MO from mobile and GA from gaming. The mouthful of a name XP5-i Plus is PowerA’s newest mobile controller for iOS devices. Note that if you are looking for the Android version, then you’ll need to refer to the XP5-A version instead. This MFi-certified controller doesn’t break the mold of generic mobile gaming controllers, but it does have a few tricks up its sleeves to keep itself relevant among the competition. What comes in the box is the XP5-i controller, a USB-C to USB-A adapter, a plastic detachable phone clip, and a user manual. It’s ready to pair straight out of the box, with no 3rd party companion app needed on your phone. Turn on the controller, set it to pair mode, and connect it directly to your phone; it’s as simple as that. You can also connect your phone to it with a wire if you don’t want to use Bluetooth. But surprisingly, I didn’t notice any input lag or delays from using it wirelessly. Let’s walk through the plethora of buttons you see on the controller, starting with the typical analog sticks and face buttons you are probably already familiar with if you own any other Xbox-style controller. Holding the giant home button in the middle for two seconds either turns the controller on or off, whereas the ellipsis button on the left is for either capturing screenshots or recording video. The one on the right of the home button brings up the gaming menu, which in this case is Game Center on iOS. On the back of the XP5-i are two remappable gaming buttons and a Bluetooth pairing button to connect to your mobile device. The left button you see on the bottom of the controller displays how much charge is remaining, since this is a wireless controller, whereas the right button turns the power bank function on or off. A pleasant surprise that came with this controller is that it doubles as a power bank for your phone while you game with it. We all know how much battery is drained from gaming on your mobile device so it’s a game changer that PowerA put a convenient battery pack to keep your iPhone juiced up. The 3000 mAh power bank inside the XP5-i is accessed via a convenient lightning port to USB-C wire, which unfortunately does not come with the overall package. I’m not a huge mobile gamer, but the one game that I play daily is Honkai: Star Rail, so I took the XP5-i for a spin with it. The controller worked right away after setting my game into controller mode and I was ready to rumble. I even walked around to test the sturdiness of the phone clip, which fared fine, but I still had some doubts that my phone wouldn’t fall to the ground. It was a bit of a disappointment to find no built-in headphone jack in the controller as I had to rely solely on my phone’s speakers when I gamed. This felt like a missed opportunity or a forgotten feature! It’s worth noting that this controller is only for iOS devices, meaning it will not work on Android phones, Xboxs, PlayStations, PCs, or even MacOS devices. Considering the XP5-i controller costs a whopping $80 USD, I probably wouldn’t recommend this unless you are an iPhone only gamer. I say this because most games on the iPhone are already extremely touch screen friendly, meaning you don’t need an external controller to get the best experience. If you play a competitive first-person shooter like Call of Duty or maybe even Fortnite on mobile, then I can see you potentially gaining an upper hand, but even that’s sort of a stretch. The size is comparable to most other Xbox controllers and feels neither too heavy nor light. The buttons have great feedback when pressing them and the grips on the controller feel comfortable and sturdy. On the other hand, I wasn’t very impressed with the plastic attachable phone holder, because it felt finicky and cheap. I was worried it would snap at any second and never knew if my phone was truly secure when I clipped the holder to the controller. Like all other PowerA products, this one also comes with an excellent 2-year warranty, so I don’t have too much to worry about in the grand scheme of things. The PowerA Moga XP5-i is an excellent choice for mobile gamers looking to up their game to the next level, with its sturdy build, wireless capabilities, and built-in power bank. Unfortunately, it comes at a steep price of $80, isn’t very portable given its size, and only works on iOS devices, making its target audience extremely niche and narrow. Still, I was very impressed with the controller thanks to the overall ease of use.

Fallout New Vegas Developer Shared Pitches Were Casted For The Elder Scrolls, But All Were Rejected

Upon the mainline Bethesda Game Studios lineage IPs, the firm now has three major franchises that it can bounce between. The most recent, of course, is Starfield which launched back in September this year. The Elder Scrolls VI is underway for sometime in the coming years. And beyond that, Fallout 5 is to follow that later on – whenever that is exactly. So for fans hungry for more, spin-offs are an easier answer amid these major projects from Bethesda. Previously, there were reports that thanks to Bethesda & Obsidian Entertainment both under Xbox now, that conversations of a follow-up to Fallout: New Vegas is coming to life. And while not addressing the claims, Obsidian studio head Feargus Urquhart express to be surprised if the team doesn’t return for the hypothetical sequel. Game director Josh Sawyer also elaborated on new settings for this sequel if it were to manifest. And while Fallout: New Vegas did prove to be a proper entry that many fans believe to be the definitive installment upon the franchise, effort for a similar spin-off for The Elder Scrolls never happened. According to co-founder Chris Avellone, Obsidian Entertainment did pitch spin-offs for the fantasy RPG which were all rejected. Twitter user @nostalgia_haze rekindled this with a screenshot of Avellone’s post confirming as such. After 80 Level reported on the story, Avellone responded with another post sharing that a ‘New Vegas’ for The Elder Scrolls was pitched and casted aside. “This is true. One of the Elder Scrolls proposals (which I pitched) was intended to serve the same function as FNV did between F3 and F4, to provide more adventures in the setting during the years before the next Bethesda release.” Although Bethesda appears not to eager to explore spin-offs for its games, the developer is certainly in favor of user-created content. Recently, a new update launched for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim which integrates a new ‘Creators’ mode platform for users to upload and even charge for their own mods. EA, DICE Shares Revamp For Frostbite To Showcase The “Platform For Collaborative Innovation”

While the perspective of Electronic Arts is arguable per the conversation you have online, the publisher is tirelessly working to bring a new perspective to its effort making games. Previously, it was revealed that talent at the firm would be split right down the middle: now with EA Sports & EA Entertainment to allocate and focus its resources respectively on the games in the pipeline. But, that was only the start of this initiative. Specifically at DICE, there has been a major shift in leadership since the welcoming of Respawn Entertainment founder Vince Zampella to be the general manager for the Battlefield developer. And with the new leadership role for Ridgeline Games handed to Marcus Lehto (Halo, Disintegration), he will be responsible for the story of the new Battlefield. More recently, EA CEO Andrew Wilson told the next game is to make a return for the better compared to the latest Battlefield 2042. In a new press release recently, Electronic Arts & DICE share a rebranding of Frostbite as it emphasizes a new era for the proprietary engine and for being the “platform for collaborative innovation” between teams at the publisher. Frostbite is EA’s state-of-the-art, multi-platform game engine powering many of our biggest franchises. It was built to explore, evolve and apply proprietary technology specifically with, and for, our game studios – demonstrating how the intersection of creativity and technology is driving the development of immersive player experiences, and shaping the future of interactive entertainment. Today, we’re excited to introduce a new logo and brand identity for Frostbite, one that’s representative of how the engine has evolved as a platform for collaborative innovation. This rebrand reflects who we are today and signals not just a visual shift for Frostbite, but a philosophical one, with a renewed focus on partnership with our teams and creators. Over the years, we’ve been working hand-in-hand with game teams across EA to understand their development and technology needs better, prioritizing changes that create more flexibility for innovation and a positive user experience for developers. “Frostbite is developed specifically for EA and we are deeply invested in building the best tools and technology for our games. In this new era, our mission is to unite and amplify the expertise and efforts of every EA game team that uses Frostbite, adapting to their unique needs in the way only we can.” The press release also addresses that this latest effort is not forced upon Electronic Arts developers, but it certainly offers the best outcome among other engines for its games. “EA game teams are free to develop on any engine they choose. It’s up to us to make Frostbite the best choice for our games.” 2023 remains to be a successful year for Frostbite with the games that shipped this year. “This past year, Frostbite supported game teams in launching six titles, including Dead Space, PGA Tour, Madden NFL 24, EA SPORTS FC 24, NHL 24 and UFC 5. Across power, performance and community, the latest version of the engine is helping EA’s developers and creators to realize their vision for any game, in context and in real-time — fostering universally immersive experiences for creators and players alike.” What is your thought on this new effort pushed by Electronic Arts? The Arkham Universe Doesn’t End With Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, James Gunn Reveals

For roughy a year, the state of DC Comics is in the state of a readjustment with the DCEU film franchise coming to a close. And although Hollywood is in its own separate bubble, this time it also affects partly of the games side of things for the properties tied to the firm. With the previous confirmation of Rocksteady Studios leaders Sefton Hill & Jamie Walker leaving in 2022, there was uncertainty for these Arkham series. Currently, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is inching to its upcoming February release date with pre-orders already live for the new game. Additionally, Rocksteady Studios is already committed to supporting the post-launch for this new entry with an offline mode promised; undoing the damage originally uncovered which required being online for the single player story. Now there some reassurance pertaining to the entire universe. In a now-deleted exchange with James Gunn and a follower on Instagram, the Arkham series is not finished after Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Thanks to @dcuworld on X, Gunn is noted responding that there are “no plans of it being the last!” The concern originally surfaced due to the poor response online and the initiative for the coming DCU to tie video games to the its universe respectively. “So as many of you know, DC has been disconnected for in film and television for a very long time,” Gunn originally shared last year upon earning his new role for DC. “And its one of our jobs – mine and Peter’s [Safran] – is to come in and make sure the DCU is connected in film, television, gaming, and animation. That the characters are consistent, played by the same actors, and it works within one story.” Of course, there are other DC Comics titles also in the works that remain outside of the Arkham universe that is underway. Most recently, it was reported that the coming Monolith Productions Wonder Woman game that it is structured similarly to Gotham Knights visually; running at 30 frames per second. 4 Ways to Have a Healthy Relationship With Gaming During Holiday Seasons

For so many of us, the holiday season, whether it’s the summer or during Christmas, is the opportunity to unwind and relax, and this means playing more video games than we’re normally able to do. So whether we are looking for things to unlock in games like “Fortnite,” or we are just looking for an opportunity to unwind, indulging in the world of gaming can be a great distraction, but we still need to maintain a healthy relationship with it. Here’s a few things to consider to ensure that you have a far more balanced game experience during the holiday season. Embracing the Holiday Themes During Christmas, there can be an extra sprinkle of magic in the air, and this is an ideal opportunity to explore some festive games, such as Christmas Minesweeper to infuse some holiday cheer into our gaming sessions. It can be the perfect opportunity for us to get into the spirit of something like Christmas, especially if we’re known as a Scrooge of sorts. Balance Screen Time The holiday season can be the perfect opportunity for us to indulge in lengthy gaming sessions that could take all day and potentially all night. Any holiday season, whether it’s the summer vacation or Christmas, should be about getting the balance right. The holiday season can result in increased screen time because of movies and virtual gatherings, as well as gaming, so we should be mindful of our overall screen time and strive for balance. It is always easier said than done, but taking a step outside and spending a little bit of time away from the screen can help you to feel a bit better in yourself. We have to remember that constantly being in front of a screen can have an impact on our sleep quality. And while you might think that the holiday season is the perfect opportunity for you to sleep in, the reality is that for feeling your best, you should go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Setting Boundaries We don’t want to take the fun out of the holiday season, but we should think about setting clear boundaries. Think about determining specific periods of time when it’s okay to game and making sure that it doesn’t interfere with other things. We can easily become distracted because we are getting so far into a game and then having to spend time with the family. But as easy as it is to become enveloped with our latest game, set yourself a simple boundary and focus on that quality time with the people you care about. Be Social with Your Gaming Sometimes we just want to close the curtains and play for hours on end by ourselves. But rather than isolating yourself, consider incorporating some social gaming into your holiday routine with multiplayer games online or, in fact, with friends or family members. This is particularly beneficial during Christmas because that quality time you may not get to spend with your family throughout the year is here, and so you can turn gaming into a far more sociable activity that is going to make everybody feel fantastic.
