Over the course of a decade, Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards has evolved into the most recognized event for the video game industry YoY. Despite attempts before it, The Game Awards continues to climb with higher-and-higher view count following the last. Of course, this trend is to continue after the record-breaking airing of its 2022 show last December.
For 2023, the pattern continues with it being the most-viewed show for The Game Awards. From Streams Charts, The Game Awards was met with its highest peak viewership of 3.6 million users watching during the show last Thursday. Additionally, it is recorded that over 1.1K channels tuned into the show with an average of 3.2 million watchers. Streams Charts also shares 13.3 million hours for the 2023 show was watched.
In a separate announcement from Geoff Keighley, it is revealed that The Game Awards 2023 is its most-watched show upon celebrating the 10th annual awards ceremony this year. In total, with a 15 percent YoY increase, over 118 million livestreams were recorded for this month’s The Game Awards.
Even more, this comes at a monumental time for industry events. This week, the Electronic Software Association (ESA) announced that the two-decade run E3 is to meet its end. From once being the pinnacle of industry trade shows to its demise, it will not be the same moving forward. Howbeit, Keighley has been noted to criticized the direction the show was heading previously.
From one interview, Keighley addressed that the approach for E3 was dated which answered for the show’s drawback in attendees and exhibitors. And with the growing success of Summer Game Fest – a competitor towards E3 – it was a matter of time for the ESA to respond; that it failed to do so in a timely manner.
