Review: Aarik and the Ruined Kingdom

Developer – Shatterproof Games Publisher – Shatterproof Games Platforms –  Nintendo Switch,Mac OS, PC (Reviewed) Review copy given by Developer Aarik And The Ruined Kingdom, is a isometric action-adventure, that invites players into a world teeming with puzzles and adventure, offering a serene yet engaging experience. In this beautifully crafted game, players follow Aarik on a personal quest to reunite his family, journeying across diverse landscapes like enchanted castles, dense forests, harsh deserts, and frozen tundras. Throughout the game, Aarik will uncover hidden secrets while navigating through the game’s unique levels, which are filled with devious puzzles that challenge the mind without overwhelming it, making it a perfect mix of relaxation and intrigue. To me the levels in the game feel very much like Monument Valley or Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. To advance throughout the game and to be able to solve puzzles, Aarik will Use his fathers crown, adorned with powerful precious stones to manipulate the world around him and find his way to each goal. Some of the powers these stones give Aarik are The ability to change perspective, the ability to move objects, The ability to rotate or spin objects, and the ability to manipulate time. The combat in Aarik , feels fluid and precise, allowing players to seamlessly dodge, parry, and strike with pinpoint accuracy. Boss encounters introduce a strategic layer, challenging players to master Aarik’s abilities in order to succeed. The game’s difficulty curve is thoughtfully designed, offering a rewarding level of challenge without crossing into frustration. Visually, the game is stunning , with its vibrant colors, intricately detailed character models, and breathtaking environments. The soundtrack perfectly complements the action, enhancing immersion and setting the mood for the grand adventure ahead. Despite its many strengths, the game stumbles with a plot that leans toward predictability and characters that lack depth, feeling a bit too familiar. Additionally, the camera angle occasionally becomes a drawback, obstructing critical combat or platforming moments and slightly diminishing the overall experience. Aarik and the Ruined Kingdom shines as a captivating isometric adventure, seamlessly combining exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat within a visually striking world. While its story and camera mechanics could use some polishing, the game’s breathtaking presentation and rich atmosphere make it a must-have for fans of the puzzle-adventure genre.
