Review: Age of Mythology: Retold

Developers – World’s Edge, Forgotten Empires, Tantalus Media, CaptureAge, Virtuos Games Publisher – Xbox Game Studios Platforms – Xbox One Series S|X, Geforce Now, Xbox Cloud Gaming ,PC (Reviewed) Review copy given by Publisher It’s been over two decades since Age of Mythology first captured the hearts of strategy game enthusiasts, and now, with Age of Mythology: Retold, the legendary spin-off from the Age of Empires series makes a long-awaited return. The original game, released in 2002, built upon the foundation that Age of Empires had established in the RTS genre, but brought something fresh to the table. Instead of focusing purely on historical events, Age of Mythology introduced players to a world where gods, mythical creatures, and epic legends shaped the battlefield. For many, this departure from historical realism was a welcome change, offering a blend of strategic depth with the flair of ancient mythologies. Age of Mythology was developed by Ensemble Studios, the same minds behind Age of Empires, and served as a beloved offshoot that explored the fantastical elements of Greek, Egyptian, and Norse mythologies. This detour from the historically grounded Age of Empires series allowed players to not just manage armies but to summon godly powers and field mythological units like Minotaurs and Anubites. The game garnered critical acclaim for its unique spin on the formula and has since maintained a strong cult following, even as RTS games saw a general decline in the years that followed. As the Age of Empires series continued to thrive, fans of Age of Mythology were left wondering if their favorite spin-off would ever see new life. The Definitive Editions of Age of Empires rekindled the fire for classic RTS games, and whispers of a return to Age of Mythology began to circulate. Fast forward to 2024, and those whispers have materialized into Age of Mythology: Retold, a fully modernized version of the game that seeks to bring its mythical battles to a new generation while also reigniting the passion of long-time fans. As previously mentioned ,In Age of Mythology: Retold, the gameplay retains the core mechanics that made the original a fan favorite while introducing new elements that enhance its mythological charm. Players once again get to choose from the Greek, Norse, Egyptian, and Atlantean pantheons, each offering distinct divine powers and units. This allows for a deeply strategic experience where summoning gods and utilizing their powers can turn the tide of battle. The new Retold version emphasizes these divine interactions even more, giving players access to a range of godly abilities such as summoning destructive lightning storms, initiating earth-shaking quakes, or calling forth the mighty Nidhogg dragon. These elements are designed to elevate the strategic depth and excitement, staying true to the spirit of the original while expanding its mythical arsenal. The unit roster has also been expanded and revitalized in Retold. While the original game introduced players to units like Centaurs, Trolls, and Mummies, the updated version brings these creatures to life with enhanced visuals and animations. Players can command mythical beasts from various cultures, including the awe-inspiring Cyclops and the bejeweled crocodiles that harness solar power. The storytelling in Age of Mythology: Retold builds upon the robust narrative foundation of the original game. The updated version features multiple campaigns with 50 missions that transport players across a vast, mythological world. From laying siege to the fabled city of Troy and clashing with Giants in the icy realms of Midgard to uncovering the secrets of Osiris in the shifting sands of Egypt, the Retold version promises a grandiose adventure that spans the major mythological cultures. The social aspect of the game has been significantly improved in Retold. While the original allowed for multiplayer battles and skirmishes, the Retold version offers a more robust multiplayer experience with advanced AI and dozens of randomly generated maps and scenarios. This ensures that players can enjoy endless re-playability, whether they are competing head-to-head with friends or facing off against sophisticated AI opponents. The ability to engage in both cooperative and competitive play enhances the game’s replay value and keeps the experience fresh and engaging. In addition to the core enhancements and updates, Age of Mythology: Retold offers a Premium Edition that brings exclusive content and exciting new features to enrich the gameplay experience. One of the standout additions is the New Gods Pack, which introduces Freyr to the Norse pantheon. As the Norse god of prosperity and fertility, Freyr’s inclusion allows players to harness his unique blessings to elevate their reign and gain a strategic edge in battles. Freyr’s divine abilities promise to bring a fresh layer of depth and power to the Norse faction, offering new tactical options and ways to shape your empire’s destiny. The Legacy Deity Portrait Pack is another highlight of the Premium Edition. This pack is a nostalgic nod to the classic era of gaming, allowing players to use iconic deity portraits from the original Age of Mythology. For fans who have cherished the game since its debut, this feature provides a sentimental journey back to the glory days, celebrating the game’s roots and its impact on the RTS genre. Looking ahead, the Premium Edition also teases two upcoming expansions that promise to further expand the game’s mythological universe. The first expansion will introduce a brand-new Chinese pantheon, bringing with it a wealth of new gods, units, and mythological elements from Chinese culture. This addition is set to enrich the game’s diversity and provide fresh challenges and strategies. The second expansion will unveil another new pantheon, although details are still under wraps. Both expansions are highly anticipated and are expected to introduce even more depth and variety to the already rich tapestry of mythological warfare in Age of Mythology: Retold. In conclusion, Age of Mythology: Retold stands as the ultimate way to experience a beloved classic, combining the timeless appeal of the original game with a host of modern enhancements. With its refreshed graphics, expanded gameplay mechanics, and a wealth of new content, this edition not only pays homage
The PlayStation 5 Pro Bridges Fidelity & Performance Modes, Coming November 7th For $699

Although the current PlayStation 5 is hardly four years into its lifecycle, players are interested in the mid-generation refresh that is to come from it. Gathered from previous reports, the new system is to integrate in-house PSSR features that drastically improve fidelity without sacrificing performance. Additionally, a glimpse at the system was leaked as well. Dealabs indicated a September reveal alongside a concept for what the new console will look like. As well in the PlayStation 30th anniversary image, a glimpse at the new console was spotted. Although still sporting its tall build, it is now equipped with ribbed sides on both plates for the system. On Tuesday, Mark Cerny presented the PlayStation 5 Pro revealing its technical overcomings compared to the PlayStation 5. Priced at $699, players can now enjoy a new iteration of Sony’s best console. PS5 Pro provides gamers with amazing graphics at high frame rates. You can hear Mark Cerny, lead architect for PS5 Pro, discuss the key innovations from PS5 Pro in the following video presentation. This presentation provides a deep dive into the key performance features that make PS5 Pro truly special. Other enhancements include PS5 Pro Game Boost, which can apply to more than 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games playable on PS5 Pro. This feature may stabilize or improve the performance of supported PS4 and PS5 games. Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games is also available to improve the resolution on select PS4 games. PS5 Pro will also launch with the latest wireless technology, Wi-Fi 7, in territories supporting this standard. VRR and 8K gaming are also supported. Hideaki Nishino, Sony Interactive Entertainment Platform Business Group CEO “It’s humbling to see how game creators have embraced the latest technology from PS5 Pro, and several games will be patched with free software updates for gamers to take advantage of PS5 Pro’s features. These games can be identified with a PS5 Pro Enhanced label within their title,” Nishino added in the blog post. “Some games you can look forward to include blockbuster hits from PlayStation Studios and our third-party partners, such as Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and more.” Probably the most interesting is the decision to offer the system solely as a digital console. Although players can purchase a separate disc drive reader, the decision to not offer both does leave more questions than answers. While concerns continue to grow about a digital-only future, the direction PlayStation as well as Xbox are heading does not ease the tension. Are you planning to purchase a PlayStation 5 Pro? Nintendo Is Investing Almost $1 Billion To Avoid Another Wii U With The Nintendo Switch Successor

The current trajectory for the Nintendo Switch is unyielding to say the least. As of this August, it is accounted for over 143 million units sold. As of now, it trails behind its own Nintendo DS marked at 154 million and the PlayStation 2 that is 158 million units sold. And with a continued stream of reports on the next system set to roll out within the next year, it does not want to repeat history. For a majority of the 21st century, Nintendo has had an on-off performance with its hardware. Although is systems are renowned across the industry, you cannot deny the response the market has with its consoles. Following the release of the N64, the Nintendo GameCube did sell less than its predecessor. And after the Nintendo Wii exceeding 80 million units sold, the Wii U notoriously became one of Nintendo’s weakest selling systems. To prevent such a trend to continue, Nintendo is investing more than $900 million in R&D for the next system. What is already known about the next Nintendo system is that is expands on the Nintendo Switch fundamentals. One report indicates that the system is to feature new magnetic Joy-Con controllers. Another also shares that backwards compatibility with Nintendo Switch is also being supported as well. Nintendo does confirm details will be shared before the end of the fiscal year ending in March 2025. One focus Nintendo is also prioritizing is resellers. Despite The Downfall Of Concord, Amazon Is To Keep The Episode For TV Series Secret Level

While PlayStation is basking in the glowing response to Astro Bot which released this week, Sony Interactive Entertainment is still recouping from one of the biggest outliers of 2024 – Concord. Roughly two weeks since the release of the new hero shooter, the PlayStation firm decided to pull the plug on the IP altogether as of September 6th. From our review of the game, Rectify Gaming understood Concord could bounce back in its post-launch plans to gain an audience. “With continued post-launch support, balancing updates, and a commitment to addressing player feedback, Concord could potentially grow into a respectable entry in the team-based FPS genre,” we wrote. The biggest question that still remains is how Secret Level will handle this news. Understanding that Sony Interactive Entertainment was forecasting Concord to be a commercial success, it established an entire episode dedicated to the universe in the upcoming Amazon Prime series. But now it is unsure if it will remain or be removed now with the current circumstance. According to IGN, sources involved in the production confirms that Concord is to remain in the TV series following the announcement of the game shutting down. The live-action show is a constructed anthology of titles celebrating video games from multiple IPs including Armored Core, Mega Man, God of War, and Unreal Tournament. The impact of Concord still remains leaving a impression on the industry as well as PlayStation itself. Investing roughly over $100 million into a commercial failure will certainly have the firm revise its live-service approach moving forward. And although Fairgame$ is being received well internally thus far, it is unsure if that is enough when Concord was in the same boat as well. Mojang Studios Promises More Regular Content With Revamp To Its Announcement Itinerary

In the realm of Minecraft, the Mojang Studios title is currently in the midst of online chatter thanks to the first teaser of the upcoming live-action film. With Hollywood stars Jason Mamoa & Jack Black starring in the new picture, Warner Bros. is picking up traction ahead of the film’s April 2025 release. Additionally, the full game is also preparing more as well. Back in June, Mojang Studios confirmed that Minecraft is to prepare a native PlayStation 5 release later on. Around the same time, the Swedish game studio also released the latest update for Minecraft – Tricky Trials. The update included a new weapon for the first time in nearly a decade, armor trimming, and revamped paintings as well. For plans on future updates, Mojang Studios promises to be more vocal on its behalf offering more to players that regular the game as well as being active with its presentations moving forward. One of the biggest reveals is that the annual mob vote is to be done for as part of Minecraft Live. Together we’ve crafted a game that has stood the test of time, and as we look towards our sixteenth birthday and beyond, we’re here to talk about the future of Minecraft’s development – how we’re working to bring you new features more regularly, the changes we’re making to Minecraft Live, and more. Ryan Cooper, Microsoft’s Head of Minecraft “We know that you want new Minecraft content more often, which is why we’re changing our feature development rhythm. Instead of providing one free update during the summer, as we’ve done in the past, we’ll now be releasing a number of free game drops throughout the year. These game drops will vary in size and will bring you features to explore more frequently.” The blog post continues: “We’re changing the format for Minecraft Live, and retiring the mob vote, to bring you something new. Instead of doing one show per year (usually in October) – Minecraft Live will now become a more focussed broadcast, and it will happen twice per year. Each show will be packed with everything you need to know about the latest features we’re working on, what’s coming into testing, and the newest news from across the Minecraft franchise.” Are you in favor of this new adjustment to Minecraft updates? What felt not that long ago was the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI releasing. Ahead of its promised time, Rockstar Games was instantly met with a wave of excitement upon finally breaking silence on the decade-long wait for the next installment in its series. In 24 hours, the single video generated more than 90 million views as well as exceeded first day viewership of Grand Theft Auto V as well. With a promised release date set for 2025, there worst part for many is waiting to see when exactly it hits store shelves this year. According to Rockstar Games’ parent company Take-Two Interactive, the game is aimed for a fall 2025 launch. Prior to that, it was already confirmed the title entered the final stage of its development to fine tune the game for release. Recently, however, rumors online surface indicating that Grand Theft Auto VI is being delayed. And while the word passed online, no proper channels or leakers properly corroborated the claim. But, this appears to be false according to notorious insider Jason Schreier. He elaborated in a thread on X. “I want to be very clear: Six staff told me they weren’t *informed* of a delay. For all I know, Rockstar’s executive team could have decided months ago to delay GTA VI without telling the company. But the lack of internal announcement suggests that the Twitter rumor was nonsense,” Schreier added in the post. So at least for now it appears that fall 2025 is still on the table for Grand Theft Auto VI releasing. According to a separate thread, Schreier does reiterate that a delay is not out of the picture entirely – just not for this specific situation. “Way too many people interpreting this as ‘Jason says there’s no delay’ when all I said is that I never said anything about commenting on it,” he explains in response to reports on his knowledge of the rumors initially. Are you confident that Grand Theft Auto VI won’t be delayed? Grand Theft Auto VI arrives sometime in 2025 for Xbox Series X|S & PlayStation 5.
