While 2K continues to praise the September release of Borderlands 3 as the fastest selling title for the entirety of the publisher’s catalog of projects, it could be said as the complete opposite for another gearbox Software game, Battleborn. The title released back in 2016 as an attempt to compete against the then-upcoming Overwatch from Blizzard Entertainment. With the team behind the then-notorious Borderlands duology, how could this be anything but good?
However, the game despite the backed team at Gearbox Software and even releasing two weeks ahead of Blizzards’ first-person arena shooter unfortunately could not take the heat and was soon branded inferior in contrast to Overwatch. While the game did receive average reception, it wasn’t to the same caliber that many ranked it against Overwatch ultimately.
Now just three years following the game’s retail debut, 2K has announced that the title will soon be off the grid for good: revealing that the servers for Battleborn will be closing for good this next January.
The game’s servers will remain active and the game will continue to be playable until January 2021.
Upon the saddening news for those who active the game’s online lobbies, this announcement initially spawned from the title’s delisting from online storefronts. As for where the game currently stands, players can still indulge in the multiplayer matchmaking currently available for the game, but the respected in-game currency Platinum will also be removed next year on February 24. However, those in possession of the virtual capital can still use them.
In the hopes that despite the servers being shutdown in January 2021, this should disregard the single player aspect of the game along with the peer-to-peer games also available, right? Well, that is not the case as 2K states: “once the servers are offline in January 2021, Battleborn won’t be playable in any way.” As of reporting this new detail, there is no set date for the game’s ultimate cut off as of yet.
