Veteran developer 3D Realms has been crafting a return into the Duke Nukem era of first-person shooters with Ion Maiden these past two years with the spiritual successor to the classic genre. However, leading up to the game’s soon to be expected release date, the developer ran into legal troubles with popular music group Iron maiden as both names share a great similarity.
Now, the developer following the lawsuit regarding the title’s name has announced that the name will officially change from ‘Ion Maiden’ to ‘Ion Fury’. Here is the full statement from 3d Realms CEO Mike Nielsen on the decision:
After careful consideration, we’ve decided to rename our first-person-shooter “Ion Maiden” to “Ion Fury.” A lot of thought went into this, but most importantly it would be a disservice to our loyal fanbase and the fantastic developers, to drag out a long lawsuit. The amazing gameplay, interactivity and pure fun, is what makes Ion Fury a great game. Not the title.
Atop of the abrupt name change that the developer has made to the title, 3D Realms has also detailed that the release date for the game has been set for later this Summer. The PC release will be taking place this coming August and other platforms are expected to receive the title to be “coming later” following the PC version.
Last year at PAX East, I was able to get some hands on time and discussed the game with staff at 3D Realms. Following my initial coverage of the title, many changes have been made to the game since the title entered Early Access on Steam. My stance on the game still stands: “My playthrough had me glued every second exploring and shooting down several different types of enemies as I progressed, making the 30 min demo feel like minutes.” You can read my piece on the game here.
Ion Fury will be coming to PC August 15, 2019 with a Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 version to drop follow suit.
