4 Ways to Have a Healthy Relationship With Gaming During Holiday Seasons

For so many of us, the holiday season, whether it’s the summer or during Christmas, is the opportunity to unwind and relax, and this means playing more video games than we’re normally able to do. So whether we are looking for things to unlock in games like “Fortnite,” or we are just looking for an opportunity to unwind, indulging in the world of gaming can be a great distraction, but we still need to maintain a healthy relationship with it. Here’s a few things to consider to ensure that you have a far more balanced game experience during the holiday season.

Embracing the Holiday Themes

During Christmas, there can be an extra sprinkle of magic in the air, and this is an ideal opportunity to explore some festive games, such as Christmas Minesweeper to infuse some holiday cheer into our gaming sessions. It can be the perfect opportunity for us to get into the spirit of something like Christmas, especially if we’re known as a Scrooge of sorts.

Balance Screen Time

The holiday season can be the perfect opportunity for us to indulge in lengthy gaming sessions that could take all day and potentially all night. Any holiday season, whether it’s the summer vacation or Christmas, should be about getting the balance right. The holiday season can result in increased screen time because of movies and virtual gatherings, as well as gaming, so we should be mindful of our overall screen time and strive for balance. It is always easier said than done, but taking a step outside and spending a little bit of time away from the screen can help you to feel a bit better in yourself. We have to remember that constantly being in front of a screen can have an impact on our sleep quality. And while you might think that the holiday season is the perfect opportunity for you to sleep in, the reality is that for feeling your best, you should go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.

Setting Boundaries

We don’t want to take the fun out of the holiday season, but we should think about setting clear boundaries. Think about determining specific periods of time when it’s okay to game and making sure that it doesn’t interfere with other things. We can easily become distracted because we are getting so far into a game and then having to spend time with the family. But as easy as it is to become enveloped with our latest game, set yourself a simple boundary and focus on that quality time with the people you care about.

Be Social with Your Gaming

Sometimes we just want to close the curtains and play for hours on end by ourselves. But rather than isolating yourself, consider incorporating some social gaming into your holiday routine with multiplayer games online or, in fact, with friends or family members. This is particularly beneficial during Christmas because that quality time you may not get to spend with your family throughout the year is here, and so you can turn gaming into a far more sociable activity that is going to make everybody feel fantastic.
