Lately, video game movies have started to take over the theaters every year. Most recently, A Minecraft Movie was released and has earned over $700M at the global box office. We also had Sonic 3 come to theaters last December, which was the best-performing movie in that series.
A new report has come out from Deadline that Sega’s classic arcade video game OutRun will be getting a live-action adaptation. Michael Bay is set to direct the movie, while Sydney Sweeney is on board to produce it. Jayson Rothwell will write the script for the movie.
No additional details have been provided by the outlet, including information about a potential theater release or the plot. “OutRun” is a classic arcade game that originated from some of the most successful titles of the 1980s. Since its initial release, there have been multiple versions, including console adaptations.
OutRun is Sega’s most successful arcade cabinet of the 1980s and was the highest-grossing arcade game of 1987. When it was ported to consoles and PCs, it became one of the best-selling video games at the time, selling millions worldwide.
Sega has quite a few movies in the works now, with Sonic 4 planned to release in 2027, Angry Birds 3 in the same year, a Streets of Rage movie is also in the works, and a lot more. In 2024, former Disney Executive Justin Scarpone joined Sega to oversee the transmedia venture for film and television.
