A New Free-To-Play Lord Of The Rings MMO In Development From Amazon

This coming October clocks the second year since Middle-Earth: Shadow of War was released by Monolith Productions, while fans anticipate that a follow-up to the 2017 title might be planned for the J. R. R. Tolkien series, another title based on the same universe is also in development under Amazon Game Studios as well.

Recently, the gaming division of the online retailer announced that in partnership with Athlon Games will be bringing a free-to-play, MMO Lord of the Rings title sometime in the coming future. Initially, Athlon announced the project last year, but only this week was it revealed that the team working alongside the developer was Amazon Game Studios.

Here is a synopsis of the game from Athlon’s reveal for the game back in September of last year:

At a time long before the events of The Lord of the Rings, exploring lands, people and creatures never seen before by fans of the Tolkien universe.

Reading the short brief of the upcoming MMO, it looks that the title holds some similarities to the newly announced Lord of the Rings series that is coming to Amazon’s entertainment streaming service. This could mean the game along with the TV show could intersect at some point as both are set years before Tolkien’s novels.

It is quite the surprise seeing that Amazon is already primed to announce their involvement in another title this soon, as it was previously reported that Amazon Game Studios laid off a good percentage of its staff along with cancelling a project in an attempt to restructure the gaming division.

Will you be playing the unnamed Lord of the rings MMO when it officially drops?

There is no confirmed timeframe or listed platforms when the upcoming free-to-play MMO following the recent news.
