When Microsoft unveiled the new Xbox One S last year, with its white housing, many were disappointed that it didn’t come in black like every previous console iteration from the company. However, Microsoft followed up the white console and paired controller with a more traditional black controller and various special edition console bundles and color variants. Then, the company decided to release an all-blue variant of the new Bluetooth-equipped controller because fans apparently were making a lot of all-blue ones in the Xbox Design Lab.
Fast-forward a few months to early December 2016 and Xbox Live’s Major Nelson, Larry Hryb, offered up yet another color variant of the new controller: all-red. Now, it may not sound special, but it includes a few things that you cannot physically achieve through the Xbox Design Lab, and it’s finally coming to both Microsoft’s and Gamestop’s shelves this month.
With the all-red Xbox One controller, you get the new textured grips, improved front fascia near the Xbox button, as well as Bluetooth connectivity. On top of that, you’ll get special two-tone body with the back grip and trigger-shoulder button assembly being a maroon color, and special red ABXY and View & Menu buttons, with ABXY having red lettering inside darker red button bodies.
The best part of this controller is that it offers fans of the color red a special design not achievable with the Xbox Design Lab (the lab lacks the maroon color on the back as well as the special button coloring), and that Gamestop and Microsoft will begin stocking and selling it on January 10, just over a week away. While it will cost $64.99, $5 more than the normal white or black controller, it will definitely stand out in a sea of black gaming peripherals.
