Slated for this coming Saturday on Independence Day in the United States – the Evolution Championship Series was set to kick off with its first session of tournaments via its online event, Evo Online. However, in response to the recent allegations aimed at the initial CEO of the organization, Joey Cuellar, the event has been officially cancelled.
In that, Cuellar was faced with accusations this week where Twitter user @Pyonlkari disclosed to be inappropriately handled by the industry figure among other younger males in the 1990s and 2000s. Shortly after the allegations began to pick up wind, Cuellar was suspended from his position for Evo management.
In a new tweet on Twitter in response to the outcry of the event’s audience alongside partners planning to attend this coming event, Evo Online was shared to be cancelled this year.
“We will be cancelling Evo Online and will work to issue refunds for all players who chose to purchase a badge,” the letterhead reads in response to the current noise surrounding the event.
Regarding the involved partners that were listed to be attending this year’s Evo Online, firms have abruptly pulled from the event in response to Cuellar’s allegations out of respect for the individuals affected and to relay a larger message on the matters of abuse. Those groups include NetherRealm Studios, Capcom, Bandai Namco, and Mane6.
We stand in solidarity with those who have spoken out against abuse. We will be pulling MK11 from EVO Online.

Current management for the Evolution Championship Series did confirm that any collected proceeds already will still be handed to Project Hope “as promised.” As for what the future will hold for the global tournament event, it is unsure how future events will pan out later on. The organization has told to be looking to rework internally against the circumstance that occurred involving Cuellar and now poses Tony Cannon as CEO for the group.
What is your opinion on the organization’s decision to pull Evo Online?
