Again, Square Enix Temporarily Shuts Down Final Fantasy XIV Purchases Due To Player Congestion After Endwalker Launch

While many fans identify some of the most-played games on PC to remain in the possession of Valve or Riot Games with DOTA 2 or League of Legends respectively, the game that overcomes that is World of Warcraft. With the IP stretching over two decades now, it is easy to understand why so many players are returning when new expansions release. However, Square Enix intervened in that success.

With Final Fantasy XIV Online, the firm this past summer overtook World of Warcraft as the most active MMO on the platform. So much so that congestion for the online servers became unbearable and were resulted in being walled for the time being. But now with the recent release of expansion Endwalker, a second wave has arrived.

This week, Square Enix announced it will be suspending purchases for Final Fantasy XIV Online to resolve the ongoing issues with multiple players congesting the game’s lobbies.

Players are currently experiencing extremely long wait times due to the dense concentration of play hours which far exceed our server capacity, especially during the peak times, and so we have decided to temporarily suspend the sale and delivery of Final Fantasy XIV Starter Edition and Complete Edition. Additionally, although those with an active subscription are prioritized to log in, Free Trial players are unable to log in outside of late night and early morning hours, and so we will also temporarily suspend new registrations for the Free Trial.

These temporary suspensions will be phased in over the next few days as we work with our retail partners. We will be coordinating with them as swiftly as possible, but please bear in mind that this will be a gradual process. We will also be suspending all new advertisements. However, it will not be possible to suspend some of the advertisements due to the nature of how they were set up. We appreciate your patience and understanding regarding this matter.

Naoki Yoshida, Final Fantasy XIV Online Producer & Director

“To those who have been invited by their friends and family who have been considering joining, as well as our retail partners, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and ask for your understanding and cooperation in order to reduce congestion. We will continue to monitor the situation as we consider the timing around resuming sales,” Yoshida adds.

He also notes an ongoing bug that is relevant to longtime wait period when logging-in. He discloses it is an ongoing issue from version 1.0 of the game and was able to identify it being responsible for some issues for players alongside the high capacity of players as well. A resolution for the problem at hand is being worked on currently.

With more and more players avid to jump into Final Fantasy XIV Online, there is still the chance Xbox could see a port. Previously, Yoshida told that expansions and other add-ons prioritize a version of the game for the console. But now with these new problems currently, there could be second guesses if that is a good idea until it is properly resolved. You can read the full report by heading here.
