When Apex Legends arrived more than three years ago back in 2019, it was a breath of new life for fans of the previous Titanfall 2 which hit store shelves prior in 2016. The online experienced branched from the core storyline set within Titanfall and would proceed to carry the plot forward. But now fans are concerned about the impact Apex Legends made on the chances of a new Titanfall game.
Enough so that the developer even responded to the questions spinning online. “Titanfall is the core of our DNA,” the team wrote in a tweet back in September. But, nothing arose from the initial statement then which leaves fans uncertain on where the series is heading still. Especially with how Apex Legends was slowly turning into in Season 11 only fueled those cautious ideals.
When speaking to The Loadout, Apex Legends game director Steven Ferreira expanded on the impact of the IP reassuring that the battle royale remains as an expansion on the source material and rather not a substitute for what was.
Apex has always been an expansion and evolution of the Titanfall universe, so it makes sense that they are both still very much part of that same universe. The core gameplay mechanics, locations, and story are all intertwined and share the same DNA, so as a team it’s natural that we think of them as very much one and the same.
“As a team, we’re passionate about each of these types of gameplay experiences and are excited about the new ones we’re working on.” He continues. “Could we see a return to some of those experiences from Titanfall, Titanfall 2, or all together new ones that continue to expand the universe even further? Of course. But right now, we’re very excited and focused on our ideas for continuing to push and innovate the Apex experience.”
Unto what Respawn Entertainment is occupied with does give some perspective as to what the team will be working on until more is unveiled for the team. Apex Legends is one priority – especially for Electronic Arts – the game is to remain a core project through the second division based in Vancouver, Canada. Job listings even suggests a new IP is also in the pipeline as well.
But most evident for core Respawn Entertainment is the team’s involvement with Lucasfilms Games. Previously, it was announced that the Redwood City studio is to be working on three Star Wars games including a new first-person shooter and the sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
