Notoriously, Apple’s platform has remained a forefront for smartphone users. What adds to the reputation is its strict guidelines enforced by Apple including limited access to third-party applications and other means to install software to its devices. Recently, an App Store update undid some of these enforcements now enabling game streaming services to its ecosystem without a browser client.
Additionally, we also witnessed the official return for Fortnite on iOS. Set for later in 2024, the reasoning for the game’s removal does somewhat tie into this discussion due to the strictness of Apple’s rules on its platform. In a new update for the App Store, a new surprising change of heart was revealed. In that, iOS is now welcoming game emulators to its platform.
“Apps may offer certain software that is not embedded in the binary, specifically HTML5 mini apps and mini games, streaming games, chatbots, and plug-ins. Additionally, retro game console emulator apps can offer to download games. You are responsible for all such software offered in your app, including ensuring that such software complies with these Guidelines and all applicable laws.”
The blog post continues: “Software that does not comply with one or more guidelines will lead to the rejection of your app. You must also ensure that the software adheres to the additional rules that follow in 4.7.1 and 4.7.5. These additional rules are important to preserve the experience that App Store customers expect, and to help ensure user safety.” What has been available on Android for over a decade is now support for Apple devices too.
Previously, Microsoft has actually cracked down of emulators on its platform. In one report, it indicated that the decision was on its behalf and not Nintendo as users claimed online.
