Just last week, Mac Rumors reported that tech giant Apple has partnered with video game storefront/developer Valve to work towards the development of an unannounced augmented reality headset. Although specifics on the new device from Apple & Valve were limited due to this being a leak, it was however disclosed through an analyst elsewhere who claims that the headset is scheduled to drop sometime next year.

But according to a new report from The Information, next year might instead be 2022 for the alleged Apple AR headset. The digital media outlet shares that the decision for the headset to relocate its initial launch to a later date is due to obstacles faced when in development and required more time in creating what the two parties envisioned for the product. Among the upsetting news for those interested to learn more, this report also shared more information that was not provided in the previous report.

Aside from the new date slated for 2022, The Information states that the augmented reality headset will share a similarity to Oculus’ self-named Quest virtual reality headset; instead it will be slimmer in size compared to its VR counterpart. Another tip being the placeholder name for the headset, that being codename N301 for the joint AR device.

The report goes on to share that N301 will have capabilities offered between both virtual & augmented reality, use external cameras to survey/map out the environment including furniture along with people, and will be equipped with a high-resolution display that will virtually blend objects from the headset with the real time area of use. Aside from the technological aspect of the headset’s hardware, The Information claims that development for software will commence a year ahead in 2021.

While tech enthusiasts are already looking ahead in the approaching decade for Apple’s unannounced headset, there is more that follows N301 actually. The report further on explains that Apple is looks to create a smaller-in-size augmented reality glasses which are said to be intended for longer use. “Current prototypes look like high-priced sunglasses with thick frames that house the battery and chips,” The Information shares about the AR glasses.

A cool feature that one person who prototyped the glasses share that Apple is looking to implement a feature which adds transition lenses to the AR unit which will be triggered when in use.

Would you look into buying Apple’s augmented reality headset?
