It was back in 2017 when prolific console pioneer Atari announced a retro-looking system that would reinvigorate the industry with notorious projects that graced the populous back during the inception of the Atari 2600. Revealing the codenamed Ataribox, the system was shared to be a love letter to fans of the initial console while also attracting new fans for generations to come.
While pre-orders for the console went up the following year in 2018, the system faced a handful of delays well into the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic leaving the release uncertain for when the Atari VCS would release. But in light of a dark chapter for humanity – Atari announces that the new hardware will ship later this fall.
Fans that have supported the system since its conception earlier on via its Indiegogo campaign can expect the Atari VCS to ship sometime in October. Following fans can pick up the system for $349 sometime this holiday season. With that, retailers offer their own unique editions of the system for sale: Atari offering the Black Walnut; Wal-Mart selling Copper Gold; GameStop supplied with Onyx.
Atari returns to the living room with the Atari VCS™ — a completely modern gaming and video computer system, blending the best of consoles and PCs to delight a whole new generation of gamers and creators.
Additionally, Atari is also offering the ‘All-In Bundle’ which includes the titular VCS console, modern controller, and wireless joystick for $399.99. The vanilla VCS 800 unit will be available for $299.99 with either gamepad (modern or classic) running for $59.99 each.
In anticipation for the new release later this year, Atari announced that Missile Commando: Recharged will be a launch title for the system when it arrives. While the title did release on Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile this year, the VCS version will offer unique features such as support for the classic joystick that will launch for the console as well. With more than 100 titles also being supported for the VCS, more games will be released to the Atari store later on.
