For many big game makers, unionization continues to be an ongoing discussion to offer concrete benefits for the employees that are creating these AAA titles. Previously, we saw a milestone effort from Sega of America. In March this year, the firm officially solidified benefits for unionizing – the first for Sega altogether. Noted, the effort was also met with Relic Entertainment being sold off.

Additionally, Microsoft has continued to shoehorn unionization for its first-party Xbox Game Studios. Already, this was clear with Zenimax Game Studios seen back in early 2023 with its supermajority vote. What’s more, this sentiment was also shared towards Activision Blizzard teams as well like Raven Software; it appeared to also help its case for the acquisition then as well.

In a new report from The Campaign to Organize Digital Employees (CODE-CWA), Bethesda Game Studios has now been approved to full-on unionizing for the developer. This new standing is recognized as the first ‘wall-to-wall’ recognizing for Microsoft altogether.

We are so excited to announce our union at Bethesda Game Studio and join the movement sweeping across the video game industry. It is clear that every worker can benefit from bringing democracy into the workplace and securing a protected voice on the job. We’re thrilled to get down to brass tacks and win a fair contract, proving that our unity is a source of real power to positively shape our working conditions, our lives, and the company as a whole.

“In a groundbreaking achievement, the dedicated professionals at Bethesda Game Studios have demonstrated that, no matter your job title, you too can benefit from having a union. Through securing a protected voice on the job, workers are taking a step forward to negotiating better working conditions, helping to raise standards across the industry,” Johnny Brown, president of CWA Local 2108 adds.

“We are incredibly proud to welcome these workers into our union and are confident that together, we will secure a brighter future for all workers in the video game industry.” Certainly a victory for both Microsoft as well as Bethesda, but there is still lingering uncertainty for Bethesda teams – at least following the recent actions from its parent company.

Earlier this year, Microsoft shuttered four major teams at the publisher: Arkane Austin, Alpha Dog Games, Tango Gameworks, and Roundhouse Studios. The most prolific being the Hi-Fi Rush team. As a response. Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty in a memo said, “We need smaller games that give us prestige and awards.” You can read the full report by heading here.
