At the start of this year, the future of Borderlands was left in question as to the direction it would be heading. Namely this concern arose from the formal merge of Embracer Group with Gearbox Entertainment. At the time, it was presumed the arrangement would withhold work on more titles or additions to the 2K-owned IP at the time. But, it was later clarified the partnership would not infringe on more projects to come later on.
Since then, claims circulated on another connected spin-off for the IP. But, developer CEO Randy Pitchford told the game was not in production. It was until Summer Game Fest that Gearbox Software announced Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. Slated for a 2022 release, the team later addressed the project to officially ship this March in a later gameplay trailer.
In anticipation for the new release coming next year, Gearbox Software announced to be shipping the inspired Borderlands 2 DLC as a standalone experience. With that, Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep: A Wonderlands One-Shot Adventure is out now – you can watch the launch trailer in the video below:
“Everything you need to know about the inaugural quest set in the Wonderlands can be found on the dedicated page detailing Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep: A Wonderlands One-Shot Adventure. With six characters to choose from and added features that weren’t in the original version from 2013, this campaign is the perfect way to get you in the Bunkers & Badasses mindset ahead of the Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands launch,” Gearbox Software says.
Currently, the game is available for free over on Epic Games Store. The offer is to be available until November 16. However, all consoles (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5) the standalone is shipping on will be charged for $9.99.
This is not the first instance that Gearbox Software reflected on its previous Borderlands 2 in a similar manner. In anticipation for Borderlands 3 previously, the developer launched a free add-on paving the story for the new entry at the time. However, the DLC is now priced at $14.99 following the promotion ending. You can read the full report by heading here.
