During last week’s PlayStation 5 showcase where Young Horses’ Bugsnax stood as one of the closing games for the presentation, many grew interested to learn more about the project. While viewers were looking for ways to get the song unstuck from their head, USGamer spoke with the studio Co-founder Phil Tibitoski about the background of the new project and some of its inspirations for the unique title.
While the team has previously worked on the 2014-released Octodad: Dadliest Catch, a zany and chaotic experience in itself, Tibitoski shares that many leading influences came from childhood games that swayed Programmer & Producer Kevin Geisler. In particular, Tibitoski discloses that Ape Escape is probably the most effective title to go into shaping Bugsnax.
Reflecting on the tweet made by Geisler, he also unveils that Bugsnax also took some notes from Dark Cloud, Pokémon Snap, and Viva Piñata.
Back to the conversation with USGamer, Tibitoski also revealed that the infesting, titular bugsnax in the game are counted for roughly a 100 different species for players to find when in the game. With that in context, Tibitoski also revealed that the official, singular term for bugsnax is “bugsnak”.
On the topic of more influences involved with the game’s development, USGamer reports that Creative Director Kevin Zuhn who suggests some Bioshock DNA is in Bugsnax as well. On Twitter, he emphasized his inspiration to align with the 2007 title alongside Pikmin 3, Adventure Time, and The Muppet Show also.
