This year’s annual installment of Call of Duty from developer Infinity Ward showed to standout differently from the others as the studio decided to return to the Modern Warfare series with a reboot to the original 2009 titular title. Now with the game being out for nearly a week, it was revealed that the blockbuster first-person shooter broke a monumental record for the entirety game’s franchise.
According to a press release from Activision, the publisher shared that within the game’s first three days of release has accumulated an estimated $600,000,000 in sales. Looking at the previous installments of the game, this year’s game breaks an additional $50 million compared to 2015’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 3; then $100 million for last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and 2017’s Call of Duty: World War 2.
Not only taking the spot as the fastest selling Call of Duty title under Activision, but also ranking as the fastest selling game for the entirety of 2019 as well. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick had this to say about the financial success of this year’s game:
Call of Duty is once again the top selling new premium game of the year, proving the enduring nature of the franchise across console, PC, mobile, and esports. In its first three days of release, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare more than doubled the box office opening of Joker.
Activision President Rob Kostich then goes on to disclose that Modern Warfare has also gained more players and time spent playing in contrast to the plethora of annual installments that release in the past half decade in the same three day timeframe. “Through the first three days, Modern Warfare has more total players and total hours played than any Call of Duty opening release in the last six years. More importantly, our players are having a great time playing.”
