When defining developer CD Projekt Red for its namely releases in the past decade, the firm is most associated with creating strictly single-player RPG experiences. And while the Polish game studio is now breaking into the future with its work on the recent release of Cyberpunk 2077, there is also a new approach to how the game developer will pursue its games as well: online multiplayer.
In the past, CD Projekt Red disclosed that Cyberpunk 2077 will be the first catalyst for its games to feature online connectivity for the first time. The team later went on to clarify that features like microtransactions will be present in only the online component. As of yet, the team has yet to address when the online is coming.
But in a new CD Projekt Red Group Strategy Update, the developer tells that it is heavily reconsidering as to if the studio will still pursue online support for Cyberpunk 2077.
So CD Projekt Red makes single-player, story-driven AAA RPGs – that is not changing. What is changing is our long-term approach to online. And by this we need ensuring we are properly prepared to implement online elements in our games where they make sense. We don’t want to go overboard or lose our single player DNA.
We want to take thoughtful steps to build robust online capabilities. Previously we hinted that our next AAA would be a multiplayer Cyberpunk game, but we have decided to reconsider this plan given our new, more systematic and agile approach instead of primarily on focusing on one big online experience or game.
Adam Kicinski, CD Projekt Red President & CEO
Although CD Projekt Red is adamant to continue tackling online support for its projects, the certainty once held towards Cyberpunk 2077 is now in question. The studio leads adds, “We are focusing on bringing online into all of our franchises one day.” So while Cyberpunk 2077 appears to possibly be off the menu, future projects are to aim to integrate the feature.
In recent news from CD Projekt Red, the Polish developer announces to acquire its support studio, Digital Scapes Studios. The team is familiar with assisting on work for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt & Cyberpunk 2077, the developer now goes under the guise of ‘CD Projekt Red Vancouver’.
