Announced today over at Firaxis was the upcoming expansion for Civilization VI that adds on more in-depth elements to the already immersive game mechanics.
“How will you be remembered?”
Based off that quote is what influences the main factor for the upcoming expansion, dynamic empires. As civilizations rise and fall, cities loyalty will change as time proceeds. Which leads to the second focused element exclusive to Rise and Fall, historical moment. Making playthroughs more spontaneous and genuine by using this storytelling mechanic during turning points of civilizations.

As expected from the title there will be Golden & Dark Ages being added along with the expansion. While Dark Ages affect your loyalty for your civilization drastically, it leads you to a better chance of a Golden Age in the future. And even opens up for a chance at a greater Heroic Age also. Then Golden Age is the most prosperous way your civilization will play, but the good times always have to end eventually. Explained by Lead Designer Anton Strenger to see each game era as a chapter in your civilization’s journey to a flourishing ending or forgotten demise.
Loyalty plays a major role in determining who controls your cities without military influence. Lacking loyalty will result in your city rebelling and becoming free, making it a good target for other players to take your city for grabs. But maintaining your loyalty might even persuade neighboring cities to join your civilization. Previously known as ‘Culture Flip”, this non-militaristic element has been expanded on dramatically to affect civilizations. Borders are always moving. With a certain Age taking place in all of this can also influence surrounding cities to lean towards or push away your civilization. But the most affective way to earn loyalty is through governors. To assist cities to decide how to grow in a certain direction, specializing cities.

Alliances for players are now more beneficial. More to help one another prosper in certain priorities rather than to keep from one another interfering. With different types to go by:

  • Research
  • Military
  • Economic
  • Culture
  • Religion

Along with levels as alliances evolve between civilizations. Differentiating between bonuses for different research and boosts to advance certain elements.
Emergencies has also been added to specialize during certain events within civilizations. For example as converting a religious capitol to another belief. Giving the option for specific players to join and complete related objectives. Emergencies used to balance the game if one civilization is far more ahead than competing civilizations, for those who play more isolated than others.
Rise and Fall will feature 9 new leaders and 8 civilizations, but no word on who they are. Only to expect more news on that in the upcoming weeks from Firaxis. Civilization VI: Rise and Fall will be available February 8, 2017 for PC.
