Combined, Xbox Series X|S Sales Top Original Xbox Lifetime Units Sold In Japan

Although Microsoft is not a Japanese native firm, its push for the eastern market has continued to surge since the launch of the Xbox Series X|S. In a surprising start, Xbox Series overcome 100,000 units sold two years ahead the duration of Xbox One. Additionally, both Series systems even managed to sell better than PlayStation 5 one week back in May 2022.

Elsewhere, the consoles is facing more friction recently as Xbox Series X|S would be increasing its pricing. In February, the duo would face ¥5,000 jumps which could drastically shift what momentum the hardware had. Of course, this was not unique to the one territory as other price adjustments came to other parts of the world. Microsoft again hit more price increases more recently alongside Xbox Game Pass general pricing too.

However, this week it was revealed that Xbox Series X|S made a milestone advancement in terms of sales in Japan. In that, it has exceeded the lifetime units sold of the original Xbox. From @Genki_JPN on X, it is revealed that the original system sold 472,992 whilst the newer duo already overcome that record with 473,570.

In terms of the overall distribution of both Xbox Series X & Xbox Series S, the entry-level digital console sold more units. Gematsu put this into perspective with the recent Famitsu weekly report. From the transcription, it shares lifetime sales of Xbox Series X is 206,554 as the latter Xbox Series S sold 268,862 – a total 50,000 more units than its towering sibling system.

This trajectory of the Xbox Series S comes at no surprise. Previously, the unit did outperform both the Nintendo Switch & PlayStation 5 in a prior Black Friday report from 2021. Even more, Microsoft itself also anticipated the weaker unit to sell better thanks to its easier to swallow $300 price tag at launch. You can read the full report by heading here.
