Sony’s presence in the public for the past year has shown to shrink in size regarding major events throughout the gaming landscape. Speaking of specifically is the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) held in Los Angeles every June. The yearly show comprised of press conferences held prior to the event follow suit the three-day experience itself introduces what’s next to come for the video game industry.
However, for the biggest console giant for this generation, Sony Interactive Entertainment decided it was best for the company to withhold attending E3 which would be considered such an outlandish decision just a few years back. But the company chose to do so regardless of fan preference and that decision might turn into a yearly pattern according to a recent report.
Coming from gaming outlet Video Game Chronicles, the website discloses that Sony does not look likely to be returning to E3 for 2020, their sources say. The site also goes into detail to suggest that Microsoft possibly even anticipates Sony’s absence at the June event to take advantage of this holiday season mapped for the arrival of the next generation for console hardware.
In addition to certain speculation and anonymous talks, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter tells of his skepticism regarding Sony returning to E3 this year as well.
As far as I know, they don’t plan to attend. I think that’s a huge mistake, as their “focus on the consumer” is not inconsistent with their attendance at the premier industry trade show. I hope they change their minds, but am skeptical.
Video Game Chronicles even goes to the lengths when investigating on the matter for the event itself as the Electronic Software Association (ESA) who orchestrates the show has yet to release 2020’s plans. Acknowledging the poor-timed restructuring at the company, the website does suggest that Sony unwilling to participate this year could also be a reason for the tardy announcement.
Aside from theorizing rationale for Sony possibly skipping its second year in a row, the company has also proven elsewhere to not show interest for public concern. Siding with the annual PlayStation Experience event that the company organizes, Sony in both 2018 and 2019 has decided not to host the show which helps draw a clearer picture on the subject leading to this coming June.
Do you think Sony should skip E3 or return for this new generation?
