Crash Bandicoot Artist Says The Next Game Was Shuttered Internally

Activision’s orange mascot Crash Bandicoot remains to be one of the most prolific characters in gaming. However, developer Toys for Bob is heading in a new direction following the Microsoft acquisition that took place last fall. Originally, claims online indicated that the team would be closing its doors for good as part of a full-swing decision from the Xbox firm.

However, it was a short lived rumor as Toys for Bob later confirmed that the team is transitioning to a fully independent developer. It should be noted that this would not be the last time the developer would be working on these properties. In a separate announcement, Toys for Bob confirmed it is working on a new project in direct collaboration with Xbox.

Although untitled, it is certainly a new effort that’s attached to legacy platformers that the developer shines best in. Amid an official announcement, it appears whatever it is will not be Crash Bandicoot. According to concept artist Nicholas Kole, the ongoing momentum of a three-year development for the next Crash game was stopped indefinitely.

Kole also confirmed that despite the codename ‘Project Dragon’, it was not a Spyro the Dragon game. What does confuse some standby fans is that he frames the game in discussion as a new IP, but describes it as “Crash 5”. “Oh heck, I’m sorry folks- it’s not Spyro. I didn’t mean to give the fandom a heart attack. ‘Dragon’ is our code name for the totally new IP we were developing for over 3 years. But I’m pretty confident if you’ve ever liked anything I’ve done, you’d have *loved* this one.”

So until confirmation from involved sources/leakers or even Activision themselves, cast judgment lightly on the claim. Howbeit, Crash Bandicoot is to soon find a new home, it is reported. From eXputer, Crash Bandicoot N’ Sane Trilogy is coming to Xbox Game Pass in August. You can read the full report by heading here.
