When it pertains to video game film adaptations, the theme of cursed or poorly received box office releases is becoming a thing of the past. With Sonic the Hedgehog 2 illustrating as such with its sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, coming out in December 2024 proves to be changing the narrative. Similarly, the same is expected for the upcoming The Super Mario Bros. Movie which received a push ahead for its release in theaters next month.

As for other anticipated films underway, Five Nights at Freddy’s is currently in production. Filming officially slated to commence in February 2023 and exciting news for its casting broke around the same time. In that, Matthew Lillard (Scooby Doo, Scream) and Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games, The Bee Keeper) was confirmed to star in the upcoming film adaptation under Blumhouse Productions.

And whilst Blumhouse is still producing this video game film, another project has just been established elsewhere. Announced by Behaviour Interactive, Dead by Daylight is receiving its own live-action film as well. James Wan’s Atomic Monsters (Annabelle, Malignant, M3gan) is also confirmed to be attached to this new production as well.

In Dead by Daylight the Behaviour team has created a love letter to the world of horror, building an incredible environment teeming with atmosphere and terrifying villains — perfect for a scary cinematic adaptation. We’re big fans of the game at Atomic Monster, and are thrilled to be teaming up with Blumhouse to bring this frighteningly visceral world to the big screen.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to work with Jason Blum and James Wan, two giants of the horror film industry, to further expand the Dead by Daylight universe. Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are the ideal partners to craft Dead by Daylight’s killer entrance onto the big screen,” Behaviour Interactive executive vice president Stephen Mulrooney adds.

There are so many fans of Dead by Daylight out there and think it’s imperative we find someone who appreciates and loves the world as much as we do, to help us bring the game to the big screen,” Blumhouse founder Jason Blum explains. “We know our partners at Behaviour and Atomic Monster will help us bring the best version of this game to life.”

For producers, James Wan, Jason Blum, and Stephen Mulrooney are said to take the roles. Executive producers include Behaviour Interactive’s Rémi Racine, Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear and Judson Scott, Blumhouse’s Ryan Turek, and Striker Entertainment’s Russell Binder. While Dead by Daylight established its own unique killers, it is not determined if licensed ones will be starring in the picture although Blumhouse does hold the legal work for some like Michael Myers.
