For those that can recall one of the most long-awaited games, Dead Island 2 is still in development roughly seven years since its initial announcement. While developer Techland, the team that conjured the original Dead Island IP and spin-off follow-up Dead Island Riptide, the team went on to produce and ship Dying Light. Now with the sequel out this past February, fans continue to count the days for an update on Dead Island 2.
Previously in December 2020, publisher Deep Silver went on to reassure one waiting fan that the game is still shaping up and should not give up hope on its release. Noted, the game despite its long wait has said to be in a good state following the addition of Dambuster Studios to work on the project. The game was previously tackled by Sumo Digital & Yager Development before the torch was handed forward.
Recently, industry leaker @_Tom_Henderson_ shared in a recent video that Dead Island 2 is in a confident state with a likeliness to ship in 2022. “According to everyone that I’ve been speaking to… the game is in a decent state and it could be announced pretty soon with some kind of gameplay trailer. […] A release date is expected to be somewhere in Q4 2022, possibly leading up to next year if there is any problems with the development cycle.”
Now from Embracer Group, the parent company of THQ Nordic & Deep Silver, has pressed in a recent Q&A that Dead Island 2 is in a good position to ship this year; Video Game Chronicles transcribes.
I can’t talk about Dead Island 2 because it’s not announced as such from the publisher. But we have just talked about [that] we have one unannounced AAA title… that you think is Dead Island 2, so it’s hard for me to comment further on that. But I am excited about unannounced titles.
Lars Wingefors, Embracer Group CEO
“It very clearly is [still alive], and I at least expect the release this financial year, or sorry next financial year I should say,” Oscar Erixon, Carnegie equity research analyst originally asked. “So, is that reasonable and what can we expect from a title that has been in development for probably 10 years or so?”
As for other legacy IPs making a return from the same publishing roots, Volition is preparing to ship a reboot for the iconic Saints Row series. The game was originally slated for this February but is now shipping later on this summer in August 2022. You can read the initial report by heading here.
