The direction that Sega and Team Sonic plans next for the inevitable installment for the blue hedgehog are unknown, but we do know it is happening next year. Studio head Takashi Iizuka back during E3 last year disclosed in an interview with Game Informer that the next mainline title for the series will arrive in 2021, but did not shed any detail on what this new project will offer.

Reflecting on the past few installments that shipped for Sonic the Hedgehog, it has not been too bright for Sega’s mascot. Sonic Forces casted a disappointing shadow in both reception alongside the prior titles that proved the potential that the franchise can achieve. However, with another title that launched around the same time, Sonic Mania proved otherwise with its nostalgic overtones and redefining level design for the platform genre. However, assuming this new game will be another 3D title, hopes for a successor to Mania does not look likely as of yet.

And while we just scratch the surface of 2020 this week, Sega might have poked some hints at what is in-store for the series in a recent video. Sonic the Hedgehog-focused YouTuber TailsChannel reveals that the decade review video is infused with teases at the next project for the series.

You can watch the video posted on Twitter below:

For viewers who just saw the video as a humble thank you to the fans over the last decade for the franchise, you are not mistaken, but there is more to it. TailsChannel shares that there are over a handful of subliminal messages imbedded in different segments of the 49 second compilation. These hidden notes are said to be disclosing crucial pieces of detail regarding what this next chapter will hold for Sonic the Hedgehog.

These statements reveal that what holds next actually began in 2015, upon other pieces of information which followed each installment that Team Sonic took to better the next title and learned from the problems of the previous game. One phrase that stood to be more symbolic is when the video presented to “Remember the words […] Ingin aurum probat.” When translating from Latin, this reads to be ‘Fire tests gold,’ which only reiterates what the team said in the video already.

Going even further into the topic, TailsChannel went to clarify that the phrase is actually a form of redemption that takes place in “the refining a character through difficult circumstances.” Which is one procedure many Sonic fans would hope the developer has acknowledge following the past few flagship titles that launched this past decade.

What do you think of these potential teases from Team Sonic?

The next Sonic the Hedgehog title is listed to release sometime in 2021, no settled title or slew of platforms have been announced for the game.
