It was a big surprise when developer Double Fine Productions took the stage to show off a new gameplay trailer for the long-awaited Psychonauts 2 during Microsoft’s press conference this year at E3. Along with another big reveal that the studio will be acquired into the Xbox Game Studios family, the announcement for sure added onto the already surprising appearance.

Now, however, the San Francisco-based developer has shared that the originally planned 2019 release for the sequel has been shifted into sometime next year.

There really shouldn’t be too many other noticeable changes for you at all, at least not for a while…with one notable exception: We’re now targeting next year for release. We know it’s always disappointing when you have to wait a bit longer, but we also know that you are an amazing, supportive bunch, who – just like us – want the game to be as good as possible. So we’re hopeful you’ll understand! <3

The post reads on to share that despite the unfortunate delay into 2020, the game is still planned to release on PlayStation 4 atop of the expected launch for Microsoft’s platform. The backer webpage also shares some of the other instances that occurred during E3 like the developer’s first booth at event and RAD getting some stage time on the show floor.

It is implied that the reasoning behind the decision for a later release is due to the team’s smaller scale compared to the size of the project. Studio CEO Tim Schafer following the acquisition of Double Fine did detail that despite being under Microsoft’s brand, the company is giving the developer the resources needed to produce the initial vision of the game at their own preferred rate.

Are you able to wait out a couple more months until the release of Psychonauts 2?

Psychonauts 2 will be out sometime in 2020 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
