Epic Games lays off almost 900 of its employees

The creator of Fortnite, Epic Games is laying off many of its employees after it looks like they’ve been spending more than receiving from their popular titles. The report comes from Jason Schreier of Bloomberg where he says Epic is laying off 870 employees which is about 16% of its workforce.

CEO of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney put out a long statement stating they’ll be divesting Bandcamp and spinning off most of SuperAwesome. He also provided the reason for these layoffs saying the following:

“For awhile now, we’ve been spending way more money than we earn, investing in the next evolution of Epic and Fortnite”
Tim also said those who were laid off will receive a six-month severance package that includes base pay and in the US/Canada/Brazil six months of Epic-paid healthcare.
Epic Games has owned many popular titles that we’ve known over the years such as Rocket League, Fall Guys, and of course, Fortnite which has become a leader in the Battle Royale space.
