Among players on PC, the niché shooters that parade on the platform is for hardened players rather than those that hop on the couch via Xbox or PlayStation. Titles such as PUBG Battlegrounds, Arma 3, Rust, and Valheim are of this pedigree. And whilst some of the titles are already ported or to be translated to console, some still remain unique to PC. Of these, Escape from Tarkov is one example.
On the basis of what genre it falls under – it’s a first-person shooter. But the subgenre, however, is an extraction shooter. So far, the most mainstream to offer this element is Call of Duty’s Warzone 2.0 with DMZ. But, alike battle royale in its infancy, majority of these titles remain on PC. And as it becomes a trend among players, many more firms are jumping the gun to create their own version of this.
According to The Loadout, Krafton’s PUBG Corp is to be tackling the extraction shooter subgenre. When asked for a comment, Krafton shared a statement: “We can confirm that an extraction shooter under the title of Project Black Budget is currently in development at PUBG Studios.” Additionally, this was further solidified by the publisher’s recent earnings presentation more recently as well.
“An ever-changing PvPvE open-world and satisfying gunplay that deliver unpredictable and exciting experiences,” the description reads for Project Black Budget. But while still in its design phase, Krafton does elaborate that the title is already “considering” versions for console, PC, and mobile. So while Tarkov is still only accessible on PC, Krafton/PUBG Corp plans to make its title widespread on multiple platforms.
The same presentation also gives a codename for Krafton Montreal’s The Bird That Drinks Tears title ‘Project Windless’. The IP is a best-selling book series from Korean author Yeong-do Lee. “Currently finalizing game concept (on console) and development direction,” the slide reads.
