On the surface level, Fallout 76 and the criticisms it received at its initial launch are rightly received at the time. With very ambitious expectations to be met and the promises made by Bethesda to its players, its no wonder the outcome of the game once arriving to store shelves was severely underwhelming to say the least. However, there is also other concerns in terms of the canon for the game.
Set more than half a century before the original Fallout game, fans questioned if the story will be mended to fit in the online-only experience. And, so aspects have already which do break reality of the story already told by the series. But, there is still opportunity to expand on what has yet to happen in the Fallout timeline.
Namely, the expansion to Washington D.C.: and to make things more interesting, there might possibly be an add-on for the Fallout 3 setting coming to Fallout 76 later on. In a new discovery by dataminer u/eckserah, the poster shares screenshots of a prototype for a possible expedition mode coming to the game. For the sake of the finding in the files, it is District Columbia.
You can view some of the images in the photos below:

Gathered from the screenshots, it is fairly evident that the scenarios are certainly the location from Fallout 3 as the “Washington Monument” appears to be piercing the skyline in the background. Some architecture also looks to be unique to the 2010 game as well. However, u/cyberRaken relayed additional context on the datamine insisting to be skeptical as what is shown might not be finalized for Fallout 76.
“We don’t know if they are going to actually end up being used or not (There are a lot of cells that are fully featured and just not used I.E. Mole Miner City, 76 PVP Playground). As soon as we have any concrete info as to what expedition cells will be available in game, we will make sure to post it.”
More recently in regards to Fallout 76, Bethesda laid out the complete roadmap for the title leading deeper into 2021. This summer, the second increment of the Brotherhood of Steel expansion, ‘Steel Reign’ is to take place later this summer. Perhaps the premature finding is a nod to that?
