2022 marks seven years since the last major installment of Final Fantasy with Final Fantasy XV. Although the franchise has not been on hiatus, the series is certainly due for a new mainline entry to ship. In fall 2020, Square Enix during the State of Play then featured the first reveal for Final Fantasy XVI and unlike its 2015 predecessor, the new title is embracing its fantasy roots once more.

Shortly after the game’s release, Square Enix in a recruitment page shared main development for Final Fantasy XVI has already completed with efforts now focused on the rest of the game. So it is likely we could see the game release within the next year, right? Well you know the answer to that. In fact, Square Enix in December shared the pandemic only worsened the progress on the game by six months.

However, we were met with new information this week. On Thursday’s PlayStation State of Play, Square Enix shared that Final Fantasy XVI is to ship later in summer next year. You can watch the new gameplay trailer in the video below:

“In our latest trailer, we’ve introduced several new Eikons, as well as provided a more detailed peek at our action-packed battle system and the freedom it gives players. As for development progress, I’m happy to announce that the game is fully playable from start to finish; though, from optimization to brush-up, there is still a mountain of challenges to tackle as we head into our final push,” game director Hiroshi Takai shared in a statement.

“The team, under direction of Hiroshi Takai, has entered the final leg of development and is focusing on polish as they continue their march toward master up and launch. I, for one, would like to personally thank them for all the hard work they’ve put into the project,” says producer Yoshida Naoki.
