Initially what might have looked to be a safer approach for organizer Informa Tech to reschedule this year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) from this past March to the now upcoming August timeframe to avoid conflict from the current pandemic has now turned the narrative. Now in a new announcement, the orchestrators for the annual show revealed to be going fully digital after monitoring closely to the situation at hand.

In the new blog post on the event’s official website, Informa Tech shares that this would complement the already-adapted work style that other industry companies have adopted to work-from-home.

We have been continuously reviewing the best ways to serve the game development community over the past few months as the world has continued to adapt to developments. While we very much look forward to meeting again in person as soon as possible, we are moving forward with a plan to transform GDC Summer into an all-digital event to best serve our community.

Informa Tech is not the only organizer to resort to developing an online presence for this year as Game has taken a similar route with Gamescome earlier this month. The Cologne-held show was announced over a week ago to be dismissing its in-person show for the means of a digital event instead this coming August. The experience is slated to arrive the week following this year’s GDC in mid August.

As for remaining show of the same timeframe, 2020’s Evolution is showing to still be determined to take place this August in Las Vegas, Nevada. The organizers shared that for the time being to still go along with plans for the global competition event later this summer. As of yet, there has been no further discussion as for an replacement for a digital experience if things continue to go south.

Were you originally planning on attending GDC later this summer?

This year’s Game Developers Conference will be commencing online starting August 4, 2020.
