While kicking off the start of the console generation, there was a clear divide between Sony’s PlayStation 5 to Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S: that being the support for cross-generation compatibility. While many of the new releases that came to Xbox enabled titles to be playable on the new model and the previous Xbox One, many first-party releases over on PlayStation 5 would only be unique to the hardware.
Or, that is the image that was painted initially. But after the paint dried, the final piece shows to be similar to what Xbox is already offering as well – and that’s good! Already, we witnesses the addition of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales arriving to PlayStation 4. But, the larger surprise was to learn that Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Forbidden West & Sackboy A Big Adventure would arrive to PlayStation 4 as well.
However, that story continues to spin well until 2022 at the very least in a new statement. Over on PlayStation Blog, it is revealed that God of War: Ragnarok & Gran Turismo 7 will both arrive on the inferior SKU now.
So we have, currently, two very big, very narrative-driven games in development: Horizon Forbidden West and the next God of War. And for both of those, they’re frankly affected by access to performance capture and talent. For Horizon, we think we are on track to release this holiday season. But that isn’t quite certain yet, and we’re working as hard as we can to confirm that to you as soon as we can.
And for God of War, the project started a little later. So we’ve made the decision to push that game out to next year, to ensure that Santa Monica Studio can deliver the amazing God of War game that we all want to play.
Where it makes sense to develop a title for both PS4 and PS5 — for Horizon Forbidden West, the next God of War, GT7 — we’ll continue looking at that. And if PS4 owners want to play that game, then they can. If they want to go on and play the PS5 version, that game will be there for them.

In the past, it was already question if God of War: Ragnarok would ship uniquely on PlayStation 5 and Rectify Gaming entertained that to be the case. However, now it is shared to be a cross-gen release. Even more, Bloomberg Tech’s Jason Schreier in the past also issued the game could potentially miss this year, and now it shows to be very likely.
As for Gran Turismo 7, this might perhaps be the biggest surprise out of it all. Kicking off the PlayStation 5 Showcase nearly a year ago now, the game was presented at the time to be the definition of a next-generation title. But, with a 2022 delayed followed by the recent discovery, it is new that takes time to settle now being out reality.
But perhaps this was something that Sony Interactive Entertainment hinted at already? When speaking to TASS, President & CEO Jim Ryan indicated definitive PlayStation 5 games are years away from launch – alike with Xbox Series X|S as well. You can read the full report by heading here.
