Final Fantasy XV has been in development for what seems like forever and we’ll finally be able to get our hands on it later this year. Square Enix did release two Episode Duscae demos last year, but they were just a small taste of what is to come. Details have been slim on the game so far, but director Hajime Tabata spoke with the Examiner recently and revealed some new details about the characters’ story lines.
If you haven’t played the Episode Duscae demo yet, you may have missed out on the new progression system in Final Fantasy XV. For the most part, the game maintains the classic Final Fantasy leveling system but adds an additional enhancement. The standard XP gains from defeating enemies will be combined with an action leveling system new to the series. Having your character perform various actions, such as a certain combo a set number of times, will let you unlock additional combos for use in battle. Tabata explained it by stating
“In the final game, we’re going to have a very standard, orthodox kind of leveling up system to start with. Obviously, in traditional Final Fantasy RPGs, you have very specific ways that characters level up and gain power, but because Final Fantasy XV is an action/RPG, it’s quite different in some ways to the traditional RPG gameplay formula.”
We’ve known the game follows the events of its protagonist Noctis and his three friends Ignis, Gladiolus and Promptu. The exact details of their journey, however, have remained a mystery until now. Mr. Tabata indicated that Final Fantasy XV will follow the story of Noctis, who is a prince, and his ascent to the throne. Unlike many royal stories, this one will focus on the emotional growth of Noctis and how he matures as a person along the way. Mr. Tabata told the Examiner that they wanted to have the player experience the emotion Noctis was feeling at the same time, and allow them to grow at the same pace.
We are really trying to aim for something where the gameplay and storytelling are really one in the same. It’s important that the story progresses through the gameplay in a very unforced way, in a similar way that it was done with The Last of Us, for example.
A comparison to The Last of Us is an important one as it’s known for an amazing story which culminates in an even better ending. Mr. Tabata went on to mention that, similar to most Final Fantasy games, each area will contain specific enemies and paths that guide the story in a certain direction. Although we need to wait until March to learn the release date, Final Fantasy XV is shaping up to be one of the best, if not the best, Final Fantasy game to date.
