For most of 2024 thus far, the internet has blown up with new online, service-based titles. On Xbox, the year introduced Palworld as the game has now expanded its user base with collectively facing 25 million across PC & console within its first month. Additionally, the same can also be said for Helldivers 2. Recently, the game has shattered expectations on Steam now overtaking the likes of Starfield & Destiny 2 on the platform.

In our review for Helldivers 2, we wrote: “Arrowhead’s Helldivers 2 is an addictively fun co-op shooter that delivers explosive thrills and laughs, when it works at least. The constant server and matchmaking issues prevent it from being a must play experience right now. But it is indeed a worthy successor to the original game, and a great homage to the sci-fi space action genre.”

One of the biggest questions is when does the developer plan to integrate a PvP mode to Helldivers 2. And while the idea could meet a fun outcome, Arrowhead Game Studios says there’s no plans for such a mode. In a response via X, creative director Johan Pilestedt explains the decision is to not maintain a toxic environment within its community.

The matter on toxic behavior comes from the recent string of stories online pertaining to its servers. At least upon its release, players faced issues connecting online. It was then come to realize that some users were responsible for this by staying logged in to the game, inactive. Since then, the team did patch in a fix that boots inactive users. But, it illustrated how players did take advantage of the system which also left players out of the fun.

Overall, Helldivers 2 is an achievement on behalf of Arrowhead Game Studios as well as Sony Interactive Entertainment. In one report, it was found the game already became the most-played PlayStation PC release via Steam overtaking Santa Monica Studios’ God of War. You can read the full report by heading here.
