Ever since the adoption of the Xbox Game Pass business model, the question remains how does Microsoft view it as a profitable practice? In the past, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has expressed that the subscription has provided turnout profitability for Xbox – which also injects potential price increases as further investing is bringing more value. It was even concluded to be cannibalizing games via the CMA during its court battles previously.
On the matter of financing for return, it was reported that Microsoft invests roughly $1 billion annually to further expand the reach for Xbox Game Pass. And with major titles to arrive to the subscription – some even day-and-date – it really does answer for a lot. Moreover, Chris Dring calculated about an 80 percent loss is expected for first-party titles to be included in Xbox Game Pass too.
So where or when does Microsoft actually collect? According to a new report by Dring, the Xbox firm is reading the business model as profitable based on the structure of expenses. As part of the orchestrated P&L for Xbox Game Pass, there is return. How? Dring says there is a separate P&L for first-party investments which does not affect the turnout for Game Pass. “
“I was told that first-party games have their own P&L separate to Game Pass as they make money via other means. I felt this piece of internal accountancy might mean Game Pass is profitable, but it sure does put pressure on the margins for its internal games and POSSIBLY means some studios don’t make as much profit (or any profit at all),” he wrote in an extensive post on X.
“That doesn’t actually matter in real terms, but seeing the impact Game Pass was having on first-party games, and the amount of money Xbox was spending on studios, I wanted to check if the full impact of the service was being considered in their ‘Game Pass is profitable’ line.” Adding: “But regardless to all that. sources have reached out to tell me that even when you include lost revenue associated with first-party party games (not just unit sales, but microtransactions), Game Pass is still profitable.”
Are you surprised that Microsoft turns a profit from Xbox Game Pass?
