Ranging as far back as the Sega Genesis & Super Nintendo Entertainment System decades ago, Earthworm Jim stands to be one of the longest remember IPs from that era if not Sega’s and Nintendo’s Sonic or Super Mario respectively. The series overtime has been revisited with legacy support for new hardware including consoles as well as even mobile phones also.
However, the franchise at one point did attempt to reach a broader audience with a titular television show back in the mid 1990s more than two decades ago. However, the series only lasted for a year roughly and was forgotten while the IP continued forward into the new millennium – alike most television/film released for video games at the time.
From a report by Variety, Interplay Entertainment is opening a new division dedicated to film/television and is kickstarting an initiative for a new animated Earthworm Jim TV show.
We are thrilled for the opportunity to create a show for an iconic character that we grew up both playing on Genesis, and watching on TV. The fans have matured and deserve a current take as we bring in new audiences.
Aaron Billet, Earthworm Jim Producer
Writer Michel K. Parandi involved with the production said, “I remember loving ‘Earthworm Jim’ as a kid. And there’s so much potential in this story universe: a galaxy full of animals battling for power. Jim is an earthworm in a universe where Earth is nothing more than a myth. His struggle to find meaning is surreal and comical, but it’s also relatable.”
Additionally, Interplay Entertainment is also partnering with Disney Insider and The Off Season Producer Aaron Billet and Passion Pictures (I Am Ali, Belushi, Final Account) for the new production. Details on casting remains slim as of reporting and understanding where the TV series will air when it is complete has yet to be answered as of yet.
