Square Enix has released an announcement trailer for Just Cause 3 – setting my wallet on fire again, with a Holiday 2015 launch window & some explosive new details.
I’ll be pulling the best bits out of the Just Cause 3 news for you lovely readers to enjoy and then slowly throw money at the screen at.
In Eurogamer’s hands on with Just Cause 3, director Roland Lesterlin describes the franchise and open world games as a whole as thus – “A lot of people are using the open world as a big level and putting their single player experience through it, that’s great – I love playing open world games. Just Cause is something a little bit different from that, though.”
Wondering how? Unlike Just Cause 2, Just Cause 3 promises to feature “a proper mission structure.” This means that the philosophy behind the missions will stay the same, but there will be endless ways to undertake the objectives you are given. Just Cause 3 aims to expand upon it’s predecessor by embracing chaotic and explosive behaviour.
“We’ve got missions,” adds principal designer Francesco Antolini. “The point is, you have the basic system mechanics of Just Cause, which means liberating settlements. You’re free to liberate settlements as you wish, in the order that you want. At the same time, a bit different to Just Cause 2, Just Cause 3 is going to feature a proper mission structure.”
Principal designer Antolini says that they are focused in creating a diverse world for players to explore and explode, but is being conscious as to make sure that players can not ‘break the game’ which is something Just Cause 2 was absolutely full of.
Unfortunately, Just Cause 3 won’t feature a multiplayer experience that is huge, or at least as extensive as the Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod. Speaking about this, director Lesterlin says: “When you start with multiplayer – there are so many great multiplayer games out there, and it’s a core focus of those companies to do multiplayer. For us it’s really important not to lose polish on a big triple-A game. It’s great in a mod, but you can’t ship that mod. You can’t have something that’s broken and crashes. It’s funny in a mod, and it’s sweet. We’d have to really spend another layer to make sure we do it right, and right now the focus is to make sure we’ve got that sandbox right.” There will be a multiplayer of sorts in Just Cause 3; an asynchronous solution that has various challenges and associated leaderboards.

You can read Eurogamer’s Martin Robinson’s hands on with Just Cause 3 here, and it’s worth a good read. He states that Just Cause 3 retains it’s silly, over-the-top cool explosion styles while keeping the fun in the franchise.
IGN were also lucky enough to get hands on with Avalanche Games’ Just Cause 3, and they also seemed pretty impressed. The developers recalled the amount of bugs/lack of polish Just Cause/Just Cause 2 had, and IGN are impressed by how polished the third entry in the franchise actually is. Driving was a huge criticism in the previous titles, and IGN have said that Avalanche have really acted upon this and that car handling has been hugely redefined.
Perhaps one of Just Cause 2’s most wanted features makes an appearance in Just Cause 3. The wingsuit aims to fix some of the traversal problems that were had in the second game in the franchise. It seems that Avalanche have borrowed a few ideas from Rocksteady, developers of the Batman Arkham series, because the grappling hook and wingsuit are utilised in the same way as Batman’s grappling hook and cape. IGN describes the main protagonist, Rico, as “a super-violent, Mediterranean Batman.”
Just Cause 3’s online features, as we mentioned, are out of sight of Avalanche’s sandbox world – Lesterlin explains that “If we were going to progress with something in that field, then we’d have to start with something like that in mind.”
The trailer for the highly anticipated sequel for the Just Cause franchise has finally been given a trailer, and does not involve leaks of any kind. Square Enix and Avalanche Studios have partnered once again, to bring a return to the comical, action heavy style in Just Cause 2. Just Cause 2 released nearly 5 years ago, and a sequel is obviously long overdue. The trailer is a collection of explosions and fire, and all out mayhem, which suits the tone of the game and coupled with Torre Florim’s mashup of the Prodigy’s hit “Firestarter”, is a great way to set up the premise of the game. The trailer hints at similar game mechanics to Just Cause 2, and shows a dictator, radio towers and other government objects, in Just Cause tradition! The game has been confirmed to be releasing for Xbox One, PS4 and PC for fall 2015! For more information on Just Cause 3, make sure to stay tuned with Rectify Gaming!
