Kojima Productions’ Head & Art Director Tease Possible Upcoming Projects

The story for Hideo Kojima and his self-named Kojima Production has finally approached its fourth year anniversary since the commencement of the team following his departure operation at Konami. And now more than two months since the initial release for Death Stranding, Kojima alongside Art Director Yoji Shinkawa discuss what might be next for the team to pursue leading on.

According to the latest issue of Famitsu Magazine for February 2020, the publication spoke with both Kojima and Shinkawa on some ideas that the Japanese developer would like to tackle next. Naturally, the duo reflected on stuff that might not be involved with the recently released Death Stranding, such as weaponry. Disclosing that they would like to pursue content focused around mecha, citing to hand off designs to Shinkawa.

However, unlike an interactive experience that you would expect, they consider this proposed project to potentially take form as an anime production rather than becoming a full-fledge video game. Kojima harps on pursuing film once again, but this time reiterates in wanting Shinkawa to manage designing for the proposed movie.

Both Kojima and Shinkawa then go to the extent to express their interest in creating a manga as well at some point. The Art Director shares that his eyesight is starting to fade and that taking on a more tangible approach to their projects would be a task he would prefer later on. Moreover, there is slimmer detail regarding this paperback project than the mecha anime proposal.

The latter segment of the interview reveals that Kojima Productions is still planning to develop a slew of other projects in the coming future revolving around video games. Kojima tells of games that would be smaller budget projects such as episodic or even digital-exclusive experiences, however, he does share that there is one ”big” title that he could not elaborate more upon. Prior to the release of Death Stranding, Kojima did share some insight on the roadmap for his game studio (above).

While the finishing touches were still being freshly applied to the November-released title, Kojima expanded upon the idea for a follow-up to Death Stranding. Citing that he would contemplate a “remix” which would release at a later date. While disclosing that there are other projects he could not discuss, he clarified that Death Stranding would be the most likely of his series to receive a full on sequel.

Which project do you hope to hit the market first?

Death Stranding is available now for PlayStation 4; arriving to PC later this Summer.
