For fans of the 2013 Game of the Year recipient, you might remember the announcement back in 2014 of the upcoming Last of Us film adaptation that followed the success of the Naughty Dog launch. However, the project has yet to properly come to fruition as we are still uncertain on the whereabouts of the motion picture or if it’s still in development as we speak.
Director Neil Druckmann later shared after the ambitions for pursuing the film that the production might dilute the immersion that fans experienced from playing when transitioning. But despite the unlikeliness of the movie becoming a reality, there is new information regarding the franchise outside of the PlayStation platform.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Druckmann alongside Netflix’s Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin have collaborated with HBO to create a Last of Us television series.
Mazin is reported to be the writer and executive producer for the show alongside Carolyn Strauss and Naughty Dog president Evan Wells. Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Pictures are told to be co-producing the project. This show will mark the second television series based off of a Sony Interactive Entertainment property following the announcement of the Twisted Metal show which was revealed last year.
Speaking with Druckmann on the project, he shares to be ecstatic working with Mazin on the production. “From the first time I sat down to talk with Craig I was equally blown away by his approach to narrative and his love and deep understanding of The Last of Us. With Chernobyl, Craig and HBO created a tense, harrowing, emotional masterpiece. I couldn’t think of better partners to bring the story of The Last of Us to life as a television show.”
Even more, Mazin tells to have anticipated pursuing this project assumable since playing the game: “Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I’m so honored to do it in partnership with Neil.” Sony pictures Television co-president Chris Parnell elsewhere shares this to be of many projects that will arise between the production company and PlayStation Pictures.
Noted, Craig Mazin now helms a second video game-to-film production with his previous announcement to pen the script for the upcoming Borderlands movie. It is said that Eli Roth (Hostel) will be directing the film in conjunction with Arad productions involved as well.
