Discussion of next-generation consoles has begun late last year as we reached what some expect to be the halfway mark for the current generation of gaming platforms. With talks of the inevitable PlayStation 5 to debut in the near future along with Microsoft’s forthcoming console as well, there might be more who will be joining in for next-gen gaming consoles.
Slightly Mad Studios, the team behind Need for Speed: Shift and more recently Project Cars 2 has revealed to be working on their own hardware to compete against the console giant’s we’re all familiar with. Studio CEO Ian Bell spoke Variety about what the British developer aims to bring to the table when creating their own console.

Among the conversation the entertainment outlet held with Bell, the CEO clarifies that the newly announced ‘Mad Box’ console will run VR games at a full 120 frames per second, 60 frames “per eye”. Bell aims to create the platform compatible with most VR headsets and include all titles of the genre regardless of their age. With a “cross platform engine” on the way, the new hardware is planned to be inclusive all around for platforms and titles alike.
He tells the outlet via email his opinion of exclusivity and the decision to support all brands for virtual reality:
We think the industry is a little too much of a monopoly or a micro oligopoly, we think competition is healthy and we have the required hardware contacts to be able to bring something epic to fruition based on our designs.
Bell has said already to be in talks with investors along with developers for the high-end console and explains that the new hardware will be a “very fast PC 2 years from now”. For how or what Slightly Mad Studios plans to fully debut the console or a price range wasn’t discussed in the exclusive article.
Mad Box is said to release in about three years from now.
