Perfect World and Wizards of the Coast took people by surprise last Thursday when they revealed they are working on Magic: Legends, an MMORPG set in the Magic: The Gathering universe. Only a brief cinematic trailer was presented and unfortunately no other details were available at the time.

That changed today with the the reveal of some information regarding classes, combat and spells. Right off the bat, it doesn’t seem like we are going to get the same ole’ run of the mill type MMORPG gameplay. It seems like Magic: Legends is foregoing the standard in MMO’s of simply letting you find people running around at random to play with. Instead, we are going to be given the choice of playing solo or with up to two additional players. In other MMO’s such as Neverwinter, also developed by Perfect World, the party limit was only an option in dungeons. Magic: Legends seems to be implementing this throughout the game.

Magic spells will be seeing another interesting change as well. Players will need to choose which spells they want to include in their hands, and spells will then be chosen at random according to the official Discord post. This admittedly sounds a bit haphazard and problematic. I could see limiting players to a pre-fight choice but letting them choose the spells on their own. Having the choice made for you creates the possibility of the game using a spell against an enemy which it is immune to thus, hindering your progress.

There is no gameplay yet, but you are able to sign up for the beta here and will be notified when it becomes available. You can see more of the info below from their Discord post, and we’ll keep you updated with information as it becomes available.
