The landscape for virtual reality has evolved over the past decade bringing in a new wave of initiated players thanks to the Meta Quest. With retail availability and a friendly price tag has enabled more to enter the VR sphere. One of the more prolific titles that has been established in virtual reality is Minecraft.
For years, mods that were available for the game did entertain the idea. It was until the official version for PlayStation VR came out that many really embraced this version of the Mojang Studios title. However, earlier in September the developer revealed that support for this version of Minecraft will be no more.
And although PC support is still present, there is the window that proper release for Meta Quest could come now with the entry-level priced Meta Quest 3S now out, there is hope. But, the Swedish studio revealed that March 2025 will officially be the end for Minecraft on PC for virtual reality as well. Effectively severing the game from the peripheral entirely.
“Our ability to support VR/MR devices has come to an end, and will no longer be supported in updates after March of 2025, when you will receive your final update. After you receive the final update, you will still receive updates on your PC and be able to play without a VR/MR device. From this point on you can keep building in your worlds, and your Marketplace purchases (including Minecoins) will continue to be available on a non-VR/MR graphics device such as a computer monitor.
“You will no longer be able to use your VR/MR device with Minecraft as it will no longer be supported in the latest updates,” the patch notes reveal. So although support is still available, it is now restricted to a time limit. Even more, there is no evidence that a resurgence for other devices are on the horizon either.
